    I'm with slinky here....

I too believe that Martinez is just not for us...Part of the issue here is that we're still raw from the Bodge experience - in times like this there's nothing wrong with reverting to what we know works...

That's why FSG need to make a call to the Wirral and get Rafa back to Melwood....Pronto..

Liverpool FC: Reds have NOT offered Roberto Martinez the manager’s job

by James Pearce, Liverpool Echo May 26 2012

LIVERPOOL’S owners have not offered Roberto Martinez the manager’s job – but they intend to hold further talks with the Wigan boss next week.

Latics chairman Dave Whelan claimed Martinez was mulling over a proposal to replace Kenny Dalglish at Anfield following an interview with owner John W Henry in Miami on Thursday.

However, the ECHO understands no offer was put on the table, with Fenway Sports Group (FSG) determined to speak to several other contenders for the job before making a decision.

Martinez is the frontrunner but FSG remain interested in Borussia Dortmund’s Jurgen Klopp and Swansea’s Brendan Rodgers. Both Klopp and Rodgers turned down initial approaches last week but FSG hope they may have a change of heart if informed they are on the shortlist.

Reds skipper Steven Gerrard, who will captain England against Norway tonight, says the squad will unite behind whoever is appointed.

“My focus has been on the game but I am aware that Roberto Martinez has been speaking to the club,” Gerrard said. “Everything I’ve heard about the guy has been good and positive.

“We’ll have to wait and see what the club decide to do. If he is the manager he’s certainly got my full support.”

Martinez was informed during his interview about FSG’s plans for the club, which include the appointment of a sporting director.

One of the contenders for that role is experienced Dutchman Louis van Gaal and Whelan has questioned whether such a structure might put Martinez off.

“I have just spoken to Roberto and he had a very constructive meeting with the owner of Liverpool,” Whelan said.

“They’re going to talk again on Tuesday. They’ve made Roberto an offer and he has agreed to consider it. I need a decision by Wednesday or Thursday of next week.

“I think he has said thank you for the offer but I only work when I have complete control of football. These are American owners and the rules and regulations are a bit different from what we English set down.

“Roberto is a seven days a week, 12 hours a day worker and I don’t know whether they realise how hard he works.

“I know he won’t move anywhere unless he is fully in charge of the football.

“I think he’s considering it and I think he’ll give it fair consideration.”

Former Wigan and Liverpool keeper Chris Kirkland, who signed for Sheffield Wednesday this week, believes his old boss would jump at the chance to take over the Reds.

Kirkland said: “What he’ll be thinking to himself is ‘will I get this opportunity again?’

“The Liverpool job is still one of the biggest in the world – and it doesn’t get offered to you every day.

“Whether that will be Roberto remains to be seem. But my gut feeling is that he’ll go.”

Ex-Reds striker Peter Beardsley has questioned FSG’s decision to sack Dalglish but believes 38-year-old Martinez would be able to win over the doubters.

“I think they panicked by getting rid of Dalglish,” Beardsley said.

“I think they should have given him another year and seen where it goes.

“But Roberto has done well at Swansea and Wigan, he’s come through the system and his type of football will appeal to the Liverpool fans.”

Luis Suarez scored for Uruguay last night as they drew 1-1 in a friendly with Russia.

Wheelan is a complete throbber, why does he always run to sky with waffle, and yet sky keep listening to him.
It's a prediction thread on a wish list.

Liverpool insist they have yet to give MartĂnez the thumbs-up

            Rory Smith

“Roberto has had a constructive meeting with Liverpool,” Whelan told ESPN. “He is now back at my home in Barbados. He returns to London on Tuesday, when he will have further talks with Liverpool and when a decision will be made. There was no other manager mentioned, so I imagine they want Roberto.

“I don’t want to lose him, but I made him a promise when he first joined that if a big club came in for him, I’d let him go, and I will honour that promise.

“I am still not convinced it is a foregone conclusion, because they put their points on the table and Roberto put his. He listened to their points, but I think they also listened to his and I think they are coming to terms with the way English football is run. Roberto wants control over football matters and that includes transfers, and if they agree to that, I can see him becoming the Liverpool manager.”

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s parent company, said that it had held constructive conversations with the Spaniard, but insisted that there is no formal offer. That FSG is expected to meet with as few as three potential candidates, though, proves how highly Martínez is regarded within Anfield’s hierarchy.

It is an esteem that Whelan, naturally, shares. “Roberto works seven days a week, sometimes 12 hours a day,” the Wigan chairman said. “He is not the average manager, but he likes to run the football side and I can see Liverpool’s point of view about the amount of money spent on players. If they agree to let Roberto take responsibility for the transfers, I think he will go there, and I can see that Liverpool have set their sights on him.”

Martínez’s chief competition for the post appears to be Brendan Rodgers, the Swansea City manager, despite the Northern Irishman’s refusal to be put through an interview process. FSG has been impressed with the job he has accomplished and have not discounted him from their search.

André Villas-Boas, the former Chelsea and Porto manager, has also been considered, but it is believed that Liverpool’s interest in the Portuguese has cooled in recent days. Links to the likes of Fabio Capello and Harry Redknapp are wide of the mark, FSG being keen to recruit a younger manager.

Rafael Benítez, the club’s former manager, has not been approached. Bert van Marwijk and Joachim Löw, of Holland and Germany respectively, are also thought to be under consideration.

Whoever is appointed is likely to have to work within a novel management structure expected to feature a technical and a sporting director, although official titles have not been crystallised. Louis van Gaal, the former Ajax and Barcelona coach, is the front-runner for one of those posts, with Pep Segura, a Benítez appointment who has overseen a revamp of the club’s academy, expected to be promoted to a similar role at first-team level.

Martinez should be ****ed off now and a press release from our club saying 'we conduct our business behind closed doors and with the constant bleating of Dave Whelan we've decided to discount him as a candidate'

Steve Bruce does not want to become Newcastle United manager while owner Mike Ashley is at the club, according to Wigan chief Dave Whelan.

Bruce is widely regarded as a Newcastle fan and has previously been linked with the St James' Park hot-seat.

"There's no chance of Steve going to Newcastle while Ashley is involved, if you ask him he will say the same," Whelan told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"There's no doubt he'll leave us but it will be to join one of the big four."

Whelan added: "There's only one job that Steve is really, really interested in and that's not too far away from the JJB Stadium.

"When Sir Alex Ferguson decides he's had enough at Old Trafford then I fear that Manchester United will come in for Steve. I don't think they'll get a better manager to replace Sir Alex than Steve Bruce."

Bruce, 48, took over from Chris Hutchings in November 2007 and led the Latics to 14th that season.

Wigan are currently seventh in this season's table and if they finish better than 10th it will their highest Premier League placing since joining the elite in 2005.

in an age where everybody wants to know everything right now, I find it strange that people are moaning at whelan keeping us all in the loop. the info isn't from some cunt on twitter but the chairman of the guy we are interviewing, it doesn't get much better than that. I can only assume its because he's the bringer of bad news in martinez and most people don't want to hear he's almost ours. if the dortmund chairman was saying the same about klopp, we'd all be lapping it up.

its so strange on this site, that people who seem so knowledgable and articulate about tactics, politics, computers, life in general get so upset about such trivial things. someone in football speaks out and bucks the trend of what is deemed normal and they are vilified. bizarre. still got a lot of love for you all though.
