BRENDAN RODGERS insisted there were plenty of positives for Liverpool FC to take from last night’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Roma at Boston’s Fenway Park.

The Reds paid the price for a couple of defensive lapses in the second half as Charlie Adam’s late strike was in vain.

However, Rodgers was impressed by the efforts of his weakened line up against the Serie A outfit.

Midfielder Lucas Leiva got another half an hour under his belt as he continued his comeback from injury.

“I was really pleased with the players and I’ve got no complaints,” the manager said.

“Roma are ahead of us in terms of preparation having played four or five more games.

“We had a lot of young players out there gaining some great experience.

“The[/url] most important thing for us was our physical conditioning and that step up In quality tonight was perfect for what we needed.

“Our pressing from the front was very good and the goal we scored was excellent. We showed good patience moving it from one side to the other.

“We need to improve at the back as we defended poorly for their goals but it’s that stage where you concede goals you wouldn’t usually concede.

“In the second half I thought Lucas was fantastic with some of his passing. Overall there were a lot of positives to take from the game and it puts us well on the road to being ready for the start of the season.”

Liverpool move on to Baltimore tomorrow and Rodgers is likely to play a number of the club’s England internationals and new boy Fabio Borini against Tottenham in Saturday’s final tour friendly.

“In the next couple of days I’ll assess them but some of them will be involved with one eye on the Europa League game,” he said. “Once we introduce a lot of our quality players back into the group then we will see a step up in the final third.

"We will be better with the ball.

"But all the boys are working really well and they have taken on board what we’ve asked of them.”

once we went one nil down he really upped his game and took charge of the midfield. he was absolute quality and rodgers is right his passing was brilliant.

cant believe i used to give him stick and its something im ashamed of but he is one of the best players at our club and we're lucky to have him.

Lucas is worldlclass his positioning was utterly superb ...unlike Spearing who moves around like he has just done a packet of Pro Plus demanding to have the ball every 2 secound .. hands out stretched Exclaiming ... My Feet !!! Look at my Feet !! please delever the ball to me .... At my Feet !!!!!

Lucas casually trots into a position were he makes the decision for the person with the ball, yes I am here, I will take the ball off you

I am liking what I am seeing thus far

I was thinking that hence I'm viewing the game more as what Rodgers called it; 'physical conditioning' with glimpses of everything else, which there was.

Agree with everything Rodgers said there. Ecclestone, Sterling, Cole, Pacheco and Morgan did well to harrass the Roma defence.

The patience thing will take time too. We lacked that last season and although a few of the players trained under Rafa regarding it, there are quite a few who need to learn this quality.

Lucas is boss. I can't wait to see him gain more match fitness and keep our midfield ticking over.

the thing about pressing is that you need to get your angles right and although we pressed hard our approaches sometimes werent right so they were just popping the ball off easily. But thats something that will come with more games and more work on the training pitch.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

One of my criticisms last season was the lack of a system and philosophy. I really feel like we have a manager who offers this and has a clear idea of how to achieve it. I can't wait to see how things progress and our play develop.

I was a little perturbed by our Goal Keeper whos name I cannot remember repeatedly hoofed the ball up pitch after about 10 passes of keeping the ball, pass back to the keeper, under no pressure .. wallop ...

I just wish Brendan Rogers, in the middle of play walked across the pitch, went up to him, shuck his hand, handed him his mini travel case and Airplane ticket and said.

Ok Buy, Galucchopi its been emotional
