Our worst ever season was 1903/04 when our leading scorer had nine goals (and we got relegated from div1)

Just looking at some of the goals scored figures.

Really shows how much of a goal scoring achievement breaking the 100 goal mark was for us when throughout the entire history of the club when had only done it once before (Second division 1895/96).

Another figure that caught my eye was that last season was the first time we scored more than 80 goals in a league season since the 1987/88 season.

Then I looked at how often we have broken even the 70 goal mark since the last time we won the league in 1989/90.

24 seasons - number of times we scored 70 goals or more in the league? 6
Number of times we finished a season on 59 goals of less in that same time? 9 with this season looking a
good bet to make that 10 times

The good news is we may not ship 50 goals this season

Rodgers' seriously needs goals next season. I mean seriously. Its not for lack of creativity as no team plays more fluid football than us. But its, again, the finishing. Coutinho after all his practicing can still only muster a handful, Sterling (lets just leave it), and Henderson I have no faith in.

Sturridge will be out for the start of next season for two months (extend as required) and we'll be left in the same situation. Origi will/can not be as poor as what we've had in the past two seasons (Aspas, Moses, Borini, Lambert, Balotelli) and Ibe is better in front of goal than the players I've mentioned above. But they still don't offer enough firepower.

The reason Manutd broke out of their rut - which looked likely to last all season - was because of goals. Flukey ones, last minute ones, whatever. But goals. From Rooney, Mata, Herrera and Fellaini.

I wonder if we can sell Sturridge to raise some funds? I would have hung myself for heresy even thinking this but now I'm open to anything.

So is Sturridge lacking match fitness/sharpness/cutting edge.....is it the constant change in formation with Sterling paying wingback,is he missing the guile and skill of a player like Suarez ?if he doesn't start showing a real return to form then this is going to carry over to next season and with Sturridge and Balotelli sick and injured The NHS is under real pressure...joke aside goals will always get you out of predicaments, just hope we haven't seen the best of Daniel Sturridge just yet.

From the sidelines Sturridge has seen that our team is nothing without him. That's just heaped even more pressure on his shoulders and is now always trying to do something special to win every game. He just needs to relax, his fitness and sharpness is nearly there (despite those Heskey touches yesterday).

We all thought having Daniel back all our problems would be solved , and we are still struggling for goals ,

does the central midfield need an overhaul ? as teams seem to cut off the supply to the top three and if none of them can beat a man , we are stuck with the sideways passing ,

or are the three up top too static at the moment ,

I think we need to buy at least 2 out and out central midfielders

One of which must be a dedicated holding player

Maybe we could get away with just buying a holding player if we moved Can into midfield but then we would definitely need to go out and buy another centrehalf

Can , Henderson and another for the Midfield , Coutinho for the tip of the diamond

With the centre half needed also a right back as well , and I still have doubts about Moreno at left back , just hoping it is first season settling ,

so we could be shuffling everywhere again before next season starts ,

                      Brendan Rodgers
"When you're out for that length of time, it maybe takes you the same amount of time to get back again," Rodgers told reporters. "The key for him was to get back and be fit, but he needs a good pre-season and hopefully he'll be fine for next season. Until that point, we have to maximise what we can get out of him."

Rodgers went on to dismiss the idea that Sturridge is reluctant to play through the pain barrier with an injury, as he suggested poor luck as much as physical failings are to blame for his ongoing fitness issues.

"Everybody is different when they get injured and how they deal with it," Rodgers said. "A player will never be 100 percent fit when he plays. They're always carrying something.

"If it hinders performance, then you can only trust the player that he cannot give any more or they can't operate at the level they want to because of injury.

"With Daniel, there's been a number of injuries that he's had and that's before he came here. He had a fairly sustained run last season and served us well, but this season has been difficult.

"He just needs to find a way to physically and mentally try to keep himself as fit as he can, but sometimes that isn't all down to you. Sometimes it's about luck as well."

Rodgers needs to ensure he has Sturridge at his best for next weekend's FA Cup semifinal against Aston Villa at Wembley and he confirmed he is not considering resting the forward for the Newcastle fixture.

So, on the basis that you don't build successful teams around injury-prone players, what do we do? He had a lot of injuries before he came to us too. Do we need to build on the assumption he will often not be available? Does that mean we need two new first eleven strikers? Can we afford it, bearing in mind we need to sort the defence out as well and we probably need more numbers in midfield?

We buy a top quality forward to challenge him and to fill in when he's injured. We just didn't have that option this year due to wasting our money on Lambert and Mario.

despite starting against Blackburn, Sturridge was substituted late on with a further hip concern.
"I'll probably know more in the week," Rodgers added. "He said he feels reasonably fine."

Brendan Rodgers said: "By the middle of the week we'll have a good indication of where he's at."

What a ridiculous comment. Sturridge is easily one of the most talented players of his generation when fit, genuinely could be world class.

If only the injuries would go away.
