Liverpool: Simon Mignolet has been exposed - Grobbelaar
Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is one of the main reasons Liverpool are struggling this season, according to former Reds number one Bruce Grobbelaar.
Grobbelaar, who won six league titles with Liverpool from 1984-1991, believes the Belgian's "weaknesses have been exposed" this season.
The Reds have conceded 18 goals and are 12th in the Premier League table.
Grobbelaar said the 26-year-old's main problem is his lack of authority in his own penalty area.
"He doesn't command his area," the 57-year-old told BBC Sport.
"I've likened Mignolet to worse than Dracula because at least Dracula comes out of his coffin now and then. He seems to stay on his line and that's it. That whole area, not just the six-yard area, is the goalkeeper's."
Goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel last month defended Mignolet following criticism from his former Manchester United team-mate Gary Neville.
He accused Neville of a "character assassination" on Mignolet following his performance in the Merseyside derby against Everton.
Liverpool finished second in the Premier League table last season, two points behind champions Manchester City, but the Reds are currently 12th in this season's campaign.
"Any team that lets in 52 [50] goals should never be in second position in the first place," the former Zimbabwe international added.
"That was masked and brushed over because of the brilliance of Suarez and Sturridge, scoring you so many goals.
"You have got to shore up the back. Get yourself someone in goal who can actually only let in 30 goals a season, or fewer than 30 goals."
As long as Mignolet doesnt help himself to a Brucie-bonus to leave in goals we will be okay.....
Mignolet is a crazy rollercoaster of a keeper. He microcosomed (not a word itself, but whatever) his whole career with a brilliant reaction save one minute, then a flap and limp submission in the 6 yard box to let in the goal. Sublime to ridiculous within 2 minutes. He's not reliable, but it has to be mental.
their goal yesterday came from a basic error in judgement, before the corner had been taken he had decided to come for the ball; however it appeared in his anxiety he got there way too soon & therefore lost any advantage he had as he was then having to catch the ball from a standing start (under the ball).
Had he waited until the ball had been kicked & judged his movement better he would have been two/three foot higher & therefore could have dealt with it better.
He is shot as a keeper, other than instant reaction saves where he doesn't time to think; give him time to consider options & he is awful.
I'm amazed we haven't. The poor ****er has managed to totally Munson his career
A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.
Poor keeper for us, but still made a couple of claims and a good save or two, especially at the end.
But its all for nought, if he's making fundamental errors like the goal last high. Easy catch for him and he completely fluffs it. At least his kicking wasn't under the microscope last night, but he's such a weak link at the back that his replacement is a top priority. Interesting to see that there was barely any talking with the CBs last night.
Then again......it was only a League 2 side.
