He'll come good, he has shown his class already and he's only 25 so still young for a keeper, and this is his first big club where everything is under the spotlight

As shaggy says the constantly changing back four can't help

If we managed to field Enrique, sakho, skrtel and Johnson for ten straight games then the defense would look a lot more solid

Not having a settled back 4 has not helped one bit.

Overall he has probably saved us more points than he has cost us. Pepe might have made fewer errors but he wouldn't have made some of the saves that Mignolet has.

It's definitely a sign that though we are free scoring, we ship a few goals too. You can't have everything I guess, and it's great to see the emphasis on attack. I'd much rather watch us win 5-3 than one nil every week.

i would have preferred begovic but mignolet is good enough and a definate improvement of pepe.
imho it is vital to sort out the defence and communication so there is more confidence in each other.
removing all the weak links makes us stronger

I think Mig is getting off lightly simply because we are scoring so many. His mistake count this year is far too high for comfort. Substantial improvement needed

I have my concerns, but I'll give him more time to prove me wrong.

I think this discussion just shows that the idea that just being a shot stopper isn't enough and the other parts of the game do potentially cost/prevent goals.
Mignolet at present offers very good shot stopping and decent distribution (which is still improving so he deserves credit there) but little else. If he doesn't improve I think we will have to consider bringing Reina back or looking for a new keeper in the long run.

That is way too harsh an assessment imo. He's made a few dubious decisions over the par month but he's had some major defensive lapses to contend with also. Over the season so far he's been very good all round and better than Reina last season who struggled to stop anything aimed in his direction at times.

I actually think the discussion shows the opposite of your usual claim that all PL keepers are good shop stoppers to the point where it becomes an unimportant consideration. He has made saves this season that pepe wouldn't have, particularly near the end of games, and that at least makes up for a few poor decisions in terms of goals conceded.

That's a very harsh assessment on Pepe too who was actually quite good last year and will probably finish the season with a better goals against record.

The ‘Pepe wouldn’t have made those saves’ argument is very weak IMO and completely discounts the fact that he mightn’t have been in the position to need to make the save due to his superior sweeping ability.

IMO, the biggest reason for choosing Mignolet has over Pepe is purely financial.

Aye, the transfer was completely understandable, but I’m still not sold on this massive upgrade argument.

I think I would have said secondary consideration if not engaged in an internet argument on the subject.
