Bruce Grobbelaar says Liverpool lead title race DESPITE Simon Mignolet's flaws

    Apr 17, 2014 18:29 By John Cross

Legendary Anfield goalkeeper says his former club should not be top of the league when the Belgian has let in 42 goals

Bruce Grobbelaar fears Simon Mignolet is Liverpool’s weak link as they chase a first championship in 24 years.

Liverpool legend Grobbelaar believes there are big flaws in Mignolet’s game and says he cannot be compared to his Chelsea title-race rival Petr Cech.

Grobbelaar points to the fact that Mignolet has let in 42 goals and Cech just 24, and claimed Liverpool “should not be top of the league” with such a bad defensive record.

Mignolet, 26, moved to Anfield last summer from Sunderland for £9m but has dropped a string of clangers which have left Grobbelaar insisting he must improve his game.

Grobbelaar, in an interview to promote the Prostate Cancer UK charity, said: “Mignolet is a good shot-stopper, but by no means the best all-round keeper.

“A good keeper should be easy on his feet, plays out from the back and commands himself in the penalty box.

“A keeper should never be beaten – as he has been – by a header from three yards out. The keeper coach has to work him harder and he can improve a lot, of course he can.

“Another point is his positioning on free-kicks. His starting position is not right. The team and the defence is too far back for the keeper. They’re on top of him. He’s not commanding enough.

“Another reason I look at Mignolet is the number of goals he’s conceded. Any team which concedes that number of goals should not be top of the league.

“You compare that to the number of goals Petr Cech has conceded at Chelsea and that tells you the difference. Any good team starts from the back.”

Mignolet was a big gamble by the Reds' boss Brendan Rodgers as he was brought in to replace Pepe Reina who went to Napoli on a season long loan.

The Belgian has had some good games but some high profile errors – like the gaffe at Manchester City which came during a bad spell at Christmas – have raised some doubts and questions about his form.

European Cup winner Grobbelaar, who won the title six times with Liverpool, believes Liverpool can win the Premier League this season thanks to their strike force.

Grobbelaar believes Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling are the best in the Premier League and will take some stopping.

“Can they win the league?” asked Grobbelaar. “Yes. Most definitely, yes. I was asked back in November and I said then they could win it and everybody laughed.

“But they’re not laughing now. They’re playing great football. This forward line – Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling – is fantastic. They’ve got pace, they’re great to watch.

"They do let in too many goals. But they can definitely win it.”

Grobbelaar believes the standard of keepers is high, but was dismissive of Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris.

He added: “Generally, in the Premier League, Ben Foster has been brilliant. I would play Brad Friedel more at Tottenham as I’m not a fan of Hugo Lloris at all. He’s not a full bag of tricks. De Gea has been brilliant at times.

“The other one I like is Tim Krul. But, once again, there’s lots of foreign keepers in there which is a shame for English keepers coming through. There’s not enough and you have to look to foreign keepers.”

Aye. Whilst I feel Mignolet needs to improve in one or two areas the piece by Bruce is harsh to say the least.

The difference being that Chelsea play ****house defensive football. It's a silly interview that was ill advised.

                Daft interview, daft timing.

What about when you're on for the highest scoring season by any team in this league since the 60s?

“You compare that to the number of goals Petr Cech has conceded at Chelsea and that tells you the difference. Any good team starts from the back.”

Yeah, that good team that cost more money, spends more on wages, has a vastly inferior goal difference and is behind us in the table.

                  Thoughts on Migs?

He's had some abuse at times but I think he's had a decent first season, if not completely convincing. An improvement on Pep last season, but I think he'll have to improve to stick around for the long term.

He's an excellent shot stopper and has saved our skin at times this year, but his ability on the ball and decision making at crosses hasn't been the best. I wouldn't sell him in the summer, but I'd expect an improvement from him next season.

He's been grim at times. But I would argue he has given one of the most important moments this season. I don't think you can overstate how vital that penalty save was in the first game. Could have completely deflated the team to lose like that but he saved it, we had a winning start and the rest is [very nearly] history.

Grobbelaar's comments were an ill-advised irritant, but he was not far off the mark. Quality shot stopper but some obvious flaws elsewhere in his game. Distribution and command of the area being the obvious ones.

                        Mixed bag

Great shot stopper, seems to try and catch the ball a wee bit more than previous. Is a bit of a flapper no doubts. Worst thing for me is his distribution, he looks petrified on the ball and more often than not puts our defence under pressure with his dodgy passing. In Rodgers system where he wants us to play out from the back.... Mignolet struggles.

It's difficult to know if he'll improve with a settled defence in front of him & a season of getting use to our possession play.

If we win the league this year, he obviously deserves to keep his place next season. Hopefully with a winners medal in his back pocket, he'll gain confidence and return an improved player.

I do think he's very fortunate that our attacking play has made up for our defensive problems though, because for such a great shot stopper, what good is that if he's letting in more goals than Reina ever did? He's already conceded more than Reina ever did in a full season and this will be our worst defensive record since James was back in nets, which has to be a bit of a a concern. I know excuses can be offered and some of them are fair, but if a keeper is supposed to be a better shot stopper then you'd expect to concede less goals, otherwise what's the point?

This isn't a Reina V Mig debate before people start weighing in with the same arguments, this is a Mig V all keepers as we've currently only got the 8th best defensive record in the league and this will have to improve drastically next year if we are to have any chance of challenging again. This obviously isn't all down to Mignolet, it's our defensive as a whole, but as this is the the Mignolet thread, obviously I'm highlighting his role.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

                          Comment

I think he's very good. If people expect us to get a keeper who never misjudged a cross then they're never going to be happy. All keepers make mistakes. He's still developing and for a keeper in a score or bust set up I think he's done as well as could be hoped. He should be #1 next year and hopefully for many more.

His kicking or distribution from the back is not awful as some people are saying. He's no Reina but he always try to pass it whenever possible. His clangers have come from trying to deal with crosses. He has improved on that front of late but he's still not commanding enough. Think it's down to his character. He's the gentle giant type.
                              Are we winning?

He's only going to get better for me. Top 2/3 shot stopper in this league for me. Before yesterday, he's been improved on his decision making on crosses and corners. Trying to link the fact that he's a top shot stopper to the fact that we've conceded more is a bit of a reach. How many goals has he had a chance at saving? Petr Cech hasn't exactly looked rock solid this season - if he had playing for us then I'm pretty sure he would have been conceding goals all over the place.
