What is it with this club and goalkeepers?

The last time we had a keeper that was good at nabbing crosses was Ray Clemence... and he last played for us in 1981 - 33 sodding years ago!!

    Bruce Grobbelaar
    Mike Hooper
    David James
    Sander Westerveld
    Jerzy Dudek
    Chris Kirkland
    Scott Carson
    Pepe Reina
    Simone Mignolet

All good shot stoppers (on their day) and all **** at catching crosses. The mind boggles

Is it that hard to find a keeper that can stop shots and catch crosses? I mean... really?

I'd rate Grobbelaar the best when it came to crosses.

Yes he did have the odd dodgy moment but that's because he came for just about everything so the law of averages meant that a few went astray.

However at least his defenders weren't in any doubt about where he was going to put himself.

I always thought (from what I can remember and I wasn't very old) that Clemence was a good all rounder but he didn't dominate a penalty area like Grobbelaar.

I loved and still love Bruce. For 'me' he is THE reference point for anf LFC keeper.

He didn't exactly have a stinker against Basel, i can only think he's dropped him indefinitely to force him out? It's not like Jones is any better He's ****e.

In an ideal world we would ship out Jones, keep Mignolet as a decent backup and sign a better keeper, but we seem far too money conscious to do anything as sensible as that.

How long was De Gea a calamity at utd before he sorted himself out ?

Hard to believe he's the same keeper nowadays.

I'm not buying into the whole Reina was rubbish revisionist view. He was awesome - and coveted by the top sides, and then declined in his last couple of seasons.

Is that not what the general consensus is ??

If anyone wants to look at a couple of rubbish keepers, they jut need to tune in tonight.

I'm not sure that anyone can reasonably claim we are overly 'money conscious' given our recent transfer record. The problem has been about need and talent identification.

I still don't get the Mignolet transfer in the first place. He always looked like an excellent keeper for a mid/lower table team but nothing more.

Sorry I meant more in terms of value, in that we would never have say a Petr Cech on the bench because his contribution i.e. very little except a cup game here and there isn't consistent with his wages. For this reason I can see why they are happy to have Jones on the bench, he must get paid **** all. He seems happy just to be here

Agree on the second bit Can't remember where but I'm sure I've read that Rodgers wanted Begovic and ended up with Mignolet.

Reina was a good keeper but he regularly flapped at or fumbled the odd cross just like Brucie did even before his last two seasons with us when his play declined.

If this Ochoa who were meant to be signing in January is dodgy at dealing with high balls into the box then he'll continue Liverpool's strange tradition in this area

Whatever happened to Reina's ability to save pelanties?

A worldie when he joined and for the first couple of years, followed by below average thereafter. I wouldn't have thought his general keeping would have affected it but it followed a similar decline.

I always thought he wasn't that great at saving pelanties in a normal game environment but was really good when it came to the high pressure of a shootout.

I think it is that difficult. I can't think of many keepers who are good at both shot stopping and crosses - Chelsea have got two of them...then there's Hart and who else?

This is exactly it. Either come and claim it confidently, or don't come and shout at your defenders instead. The worst of all worlds is when you sometimes come (uncertainly), sometimes don't, and don't communicate clearly. Unfortunately that's where we are at the moment with Mignolet. Brad Jones is better at this aspect, even if he's nowhere near as good a shot-stopper and his positioning is, erm, interesting...

Reina went downhill after Valero left and he had to put up with Mike Fackin Kelly and then John Acthterberg. None of our keepers have actually improved under our coaching since Valero either and thats what goalkeeping coaches are for so I'd be looking at that as well as new keepers.
