REina had a fantastically successful season last season, but I don't know about anyone else but he never looked convincing. He never looked unbeatable. I often wondered how on earth we came away with a clean sheet in some of the games.
That said, he deserves a huge amount of credit for last season but maybe Rafa has seen something amiss.

hi guys, im new so take it easy on me... i think the only thing Reina has going for him is his ability to act like a pseudo sweeper to enable us to keep a high defensive line and his penalty saving stats. regarding everything else in goal keeping terms he seems very average to me. He seems to punch when a catch will do and doesnt command his area in a corner situation. People can talk about his clean sheets record from last season but that for me was because of a superb back 4 in front. i just wish Dudek could rediscover the form from his first season with us where he was the best keeper in the PL by a mile.
      In Klopp we trust.

Here's the story I was talking about.

Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina has invited the club to open talks over extending his stay at Anfield.

Reina, who joined Liverpool last summer from Villarreal, still has three years to run on his current contract.

The Spaniard impressed during his first season at Liverpool and he is ready to start talks about a new deal.

"Next year we'll start talking about another deal," said Reina.

"I am so settled. I recharged my batteries on holiday in Majorca and Ibiza with my wife after we got married on May 19.

"We are both happy in Liverpool and would love to stay longer."

Meanwhile, Reina has backed Reds boss Rafa Benitez to turn his side into serious title contenders this season.

Reina is a big admirer of Benitez and believes he can help them close the gap on Chelsea even though he does not have much money to spend on new players.

"For me, Benitez does not need money to make a champion team," added Reina.

"He builds teams without spending a fortune. He did it at Valencia and now he is doing it at Liverpool.

"It was a big shock to everyone in Spain when Valencia won the title, because they did not have as much money as Barcelona and Real Madrid.

"He took a normal team and made it into the best in the country. There is a lot of belief at Liverpool that he can do the same again.

"The advantage we have is Rafa Benitez. He's one of the best managers in football.

"Winning the FA Cup was a good achievement, but this time we have to win the most important titles - the Premiership or the Champions League.

"It was impossible to compete with Chelsea last season because they had almost two teams. But we closed the gap last season and this time we believe it is possible to catch them and beat them. "

Think you're underestimating reina's ability a little bit there, I wouldn't say his only thing going for him is to act as a pseudo sweeper. His stopping of shots from close range is very good, he's got a good punch on him when he does connect with the ball, and his ability to spot a loose ball and come out to kick it is also good. He punches rathers than catches because that's what Rafa told him to do. And as for commanding his area for corners etc, I imagine his input is limited due to the zonal marking.

Something else I've noticed he's pretty good at is positioning the wall against free kicks, he seems to get them in the correct spot 99% of the time and covers the free side well.

His decision making will undoubtably improve with age, and he may not flap as much in years to come. Lets not forget he's still very young as far as keepers go, I feel that Reina still has a lot to offer and will improve with age.

also his distributing is spot spot on, best keeper in the league in getting the ball into play...

Yeah but things have changed since July -
                  1. Reina has been shaky all season,
                  2. The team have struggled

Yes I agree with that but I don't think it would be enough to make someone homesick would it?

No, wouldn't have thought so, i do like Pepe, he was brilliant for us last season but i am very, very concerned about his form this season,
something's just not right with him.
In saying that he strikes me a tough character and i'm sure once we start getting things sorted out on the road in particular, get a few clean sheets going etc, Pepe will rediscover his form again.
We'll just have to wait and see.

I would guess that he'll have an "exclusive interview" with the offal tomorrow declaring his undying love for the club and that he has no intention to leave etc...

wtf??? I havent seen a keeper command his box as well and spread himself as big since schmeicell....well last year anyway!!

He's a stone heavier than Carson too, if we're talking physical presence.

They're both very young, and at the moment Pepe looks like the better keeper to me.
