Fair enough, I suppose it is a discussion for another day.Originally posted by kemm1 View PostNo, that's not my point and I may not be explaining myself very well. Let's move on.

Exactly. Midfield is the problem. Gerrard is still our most creative midfield outside coutinho, but his lack of mobility is becoming a big problem and his effectiveness is being limited to set pieces. I'd still have him over Lucas. Don't get me wrong, Lucas is effective if your backs are to the wall away to Chelsea or City, but is our defence that bad that we need him sitting against Hull. He was bypassed today when it mattered, as against Arsenal. Then when he has possession he is slowing it down with sideways passes when we are one down. Inevitably that sideways pass is to Gerrard who is practically standing beside him. We don't need it in games like Hull. If Jordan Hendersons main task is to cover the closing down of those two then fair enough. But we need more from him. He was played as the central link to suarez until coutinho came on, and he is not able to pay that point in the triangle. He needs to step up his game and start weighing in with a goal her and there. He was no attacking threat at all today. Add to that the performance of Moses today and its seriously one of the worst midfielder we've had. It needs sorting in January.Originally posted by JohnDoe View PostOur midfield was non existent. Gerrard only contributed in dead play. Lucas contibuted in nothing. Hull allowed us to have the ball and we couldn't do anything with it. I think that if a team lets us have all this possession and our midfield is completely incapable of moving the ball effectively and creating something, something is wrong and the central midfield is at the very heart of it.

That's fine. But we can't have him and Gerrard and Henderson in the same midfield. If you take Gerrard out there's nothing going forward fromOriginally posted by kemm1 View PostI think that's an unfair description of Lucas. He's not the Patrick Viera type that you may be looking for but he contributes to the stability of the team, we just need more creativity and in their prime dominant midfielders around him.
Midfield. if you take Henderson out there is no one to press. I'd argue Henderson could probably mop up in front of the back. Lucas problem is that he is not mobile enough so jis role is very limited.

Henderson is like a crutch with Lucas/Gerrard because his mobility covers up their deficiencies. He spends a lot of energy covering ground and it feels like he has to do too much from his position. He's expected to be a force going forward AND be an engine defensively. When you compare him to Lucas, there is a large discrepancy in fan expectations. Henderson has outplayed him all season.Originally posted by vonk View PostThat's fine. But we can't have him and Gerrard and Henderson in the same midfield. I can't believe people still take about Lucas 'sideways passing' as a serious point. I honestly thought it was some sort of laboured joke that people threw out to get a reaction. If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?
