I think Lovren is actually a good player, nowhere near as bad as people are saying. 3 new defenders, new club = it aint gonna be easy. Give him a ****ing chance.

I'm not having that Skrtel is **** as well just ever so slightly less **** than Lovren.Originally posted by danperkins View PostLovren is so bad he makes Skrtel look like Franco Baresi. We have a shocking defence no matter who we put in.
It's like have tweedle dum and tweedle dee as our central defenders.

It's a poxy pairing no doubts. But to be fair we didn't just spend 20 million quid on Skrtel & hail him as a leader and organiser.. when Lovren is polar opposite to that. Not only is he not that, his defensive positioning is like something you would see down the local park. He is better than he has shown which wouldn't be hard but that's no good to us if he isn't doing it in a LFC shirt.Originally posted by rcasemore View PostI'm not having that Skrtel is **** as well just ever so slightly less **** than Lovren.

Rodgers brought Lovren in to sort out our CB issues, instead it's made it worse. The DM in front of the defence is a big issue too.Last edited by danperkins; 23-10-14, 11:40 AM.

We've got to start getting our scouts down to this particular park.........there's always better players down there just not getting the opportunity."I will make the boys feel your support"

Yep, Lovren and Sakho did ok, 2 goals conceded in 3 games, 1 clean sheet (our only one this season), not bad. Yet Marty walks straight back in at West Ham and we concede as many in 5 minutes as we did in the previous 3 games. Since then he's also cost us the Basel game, was shambolic at QPR and last night.Originally posted by G View PostAs bad as he is the one constant in our epically ****e defence is Skrtel. If anyone needs ****ing off it's him. I'd give Lovren and Sakho a go as a partnership for a while then decide in the summer where we go from there.
Marty's stats under Rodgers in the league after QPR :
65 games started, 91 conceded, 17 clean sheets. 1.4 goals conceded per game.
19 games not started, 14 conceded, 10 clean sheets. 0.73 goals conceded per game.
Not all his fault but they're the facts, every partnership under Rodgers with him in has been ****, when he's dropped or injured we've been much more secure. Maybe it's just one mega coincidence but it'd be nice to see him out of the team for a bit and see what happens. Whats the worst that can happen? We look **** defensively?!

Grim reading alright. We've got so many **** centre halves.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

- so frustrating but then again, it seems finding reliable centre backs is becoming more and more of an issue in today's game. Man City have spent £30m+ on Mangala and bar a solid debut, he's been atrocious for them. PSG have spent over £100m on three CBs, Barca spent what, £30m on two centre backs who aren't even available currently, Man Utd can't find one and others are also finding issues at centre back.

Mangala cant even get ahead of Sakho in the French side.Originally posted by john316 View Post

I dont know what it is at the moment. But defending seems to be becoming a bit of a lost art. Unless you are a Tony Pulis side. But then its so boring no one wants to watch it.*Except Michael, who died.

Could it be change in tactics that is exposing the centre backs? Maybe teams are playing less frequently with specialized DM's like Mascherano, Hamann, Makele etc. and are expecting their holding mids to contribute more to the forward play, thus exposing the defence. 4-2-3-1 is evolving from Rafa's system and it's not as solid as it was.Originally posted by john316 View Post

Are we just developing more athletic CBs that don't read the game as well and rely on their athleticism to make up for mistakes?
Is the holding midfielder position vanishing? Real don't exactly play with a top class holding midfielder currently and it doesn't affect them.
Have modern tactics/formations become so focussed on attacking play that maybe defenders have just become too exposed. Certainly see that with full backs with their attacking prowess seemingly more important than being able to actually defend.
