He's an absolute maniac. Some of the worst defensive positioning you'll ever see in the top leagues. If we can get shot of this guy, it will be a miracle. Headless is an understatement.

Get a competent right sided centre back and I'm sure there will be a marked improvement.Originally posted by RichC View PostOur central defence in general is a mess one wanders off oneruns towards the goal and drops deep time and again and the other one is a central midfielder.
I'd be happy to see us bring someone else in next to Sakho in a back 4 again neither Lovren or Skrtel are good enough imo

Can was pretty **** alright, especially in the first half along with Dejan (and people wonder why we have issues at the back maintaining cohesion), and has been off the boil lately, but there's a player there and he has done relatively well in his first season, and while he hasn't seized the limited chances he's had in midfield, I think the only way is up this lad.
Not opposed to seeing a Skrtel/Sakho partnership next season, as long as its a properly supported one both in midfield and FBs, but questions remain over Sakho and his availability IMO, and if Rodgers is still around, I'm not sure what's going to happen with Lovren.
Point is, its not an overriding concern that needs 30m thrown at it...........get up top sorted and we'll be in with a shout of top 4."I will make the boys feel your support"

He isn't fast enough to play left sided CB in a three. The few times he's looked okay was in a back 4. Put him wide and he gets stripped for pace by the opposition wingers. The reason he looks so bad is he gets so tight to them because he can't drop off.
Problem is, if you get too tight and don't win the ball then you're screwed. Palace were the worst possible opposition for him as they are set up to just counter and they have a combination of pace and strength in all their wide players.
I hope Dejan never plays wide in a back three ever again. Surely yesterday was the last straw. We haven't looked competent in a back three ever since we lost the partnership of Sakho-Skrtel-Can.Forwards.......

agree alright not worried about Can. Done the best he can do in an unfamiliar position. The Skrtel/Sakho/Lucas combo looked excellent for awhile but between Rodgers tinkering & injuries we just didn't see it as much as we should have.
Talk of Inigo Martinez, I watch a lot of Spanish football but haven't really seen much of him. Not really enthused about watching any David Moyes team. 5 ft 11 for a CB in the premier league is interesting.Last edited by danperkins; 17-05-15, 12:52 PM.

I thought this was a good signing, having watched Southampton control games and Lovren put in a solid season with them. Clearly that comes from playing a back four with Wanyama AND Schneiderlin babysitting. Also, having watched Luiz go for £50 and Mangala come in for £32M+ (?), £20M seemed somehow reasonable at that moment.
He is dire and seems lost, constantly going (falling) to ground with ineffective tackles and leaving the final third exposed to 2 or 3 on ones. He gets beaten so often, it seems like he is in constant panic mode, trying to drag players to ground in dangerous positions. When he stays upright in the box, he seems to have no positional sense and cannot use his size to make blocks or break up attacks.
Sakho remains one of my favorite players on the current team- it seems clear we need to buy 2-3 CBs and to build the back line around him-- whatever it takes to partner Sakho, do it. We should get rid of Lovren to help fund that effort. Skrtel will re-sign as well, so we now need depth.
It's no coincidence that the team have stunk when we lost Lucas and Sakho. CB and DM experience and depth with a 2x strikers who can press, move and, most importantly, FINISH and we should be decent."Our legacy begets an excellence that surpasses the particulars of who produces it." -- David Carr
