I think Lovren is so representative of people's perceptions about Rodgers' issues of talent assessment, loyalty, his targets vs committee signings, having "favorites" and having others out of favor, etc that his performances (and today was just bad, especially in front of goal and the way he was beaten for Malaysia's goal) are the ultimate expression of what frustrates fans about Liverpool's underachievement. I *almost* feel bad for him, but when he comes out saying "I can't defend alone" and "it was different at Southampton" (because you had Schneiderlin and Wanyama babysitting you), etc-- I just don't see how he wins over the supporters.
I am a massive fan of Sakho, and I am absolutely baffled at what is going on here. Lovren looks a shell."Our legacy begets an excellence that surpasses the particulars of who produces it." -- David Carr

For me Sakho has to start ahead of Lovren, while neither have been great for us Sakho has been a class above Lovren. I think Lovren is a better player than he showed last season but he still seems prone to errors. I found the interview a little odd, it would be one thing if he was our best defender and we were defensively poor but he seemed to be trying to pass the buck, which I didn't like and I worry that he won't be able to play to the necessary level unless we change to accomodate him.The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Rodgers must know - he must - that if he starts the season with Lovren in the side ahead of Sakho he will be making a rod for his own back from the word go. Quite apart from it being a plain piss poor footballing decision, he really needs the fans onside. As BrooklynRed rightly said, Lovren kinda represents how many fans view Rodgers and his assessment of players. Lovren is a total disaster, one of the worst defenders I can ever remember playing for us - while Sakho is largely excellent. There would be no justification for making such a decision. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Think it would be very stubborn of Rodgers to go for Lovren. Based on last season's performance its no contest Sakho was the better player. If he wanted to go for the "New season, clean slate" approach, even then Sakho has been superior in every department.
For me, playing Lovren would be an unnecessary risk.
