Moreno looked decent for the first 35 mins. After the lunge that nearly cost us a penalty... everything went kinda downhill for the lad. Surprised he's in a lot of people's top 3 in MOM, him and Lovren had a bit of defensive nightmare last night.

In saying that it was a horrible pissy night & we were playing away to the champions, who are formidable at home. Never going to be a casual evening for Moreno. Was saying before we signed him & before the game that he has a really bad habit of going to ground with rash tackles. He was really lucky not to concede a peon with exactly that last night.

Because of the tempo of the league it's something that could really go against him, hopefully it's ironed out over time. Personally i don't think we'll see the best of him until next season.

Man City away was the worst possible fixture to debut a young fullback with no PL experience but despite that I thought his talent was obvious to see. He's clearly not the finished article yet though, Spurs away will be a slightly easier fixture for him.

Thought he did ok, bar the dozy bit of defending on their first goal. Didn't let it get to his head and carried on playing with drive and determination. A good debut, spoilt from being a top debut by his culpability for the goal.

Loved his reading of the game when he came right across to clear from Dzeko. Most FBs wouldn't have anticipated the striker slightly mis-controlling and offered Dzeko a second bite.

I like him, his low crosses into danger areas are great too.

he made a much better contribution to the game than the experienced fb on the other side.
removing all the weak links makes us stronger

too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

Showed utter determination after injuring himself to stay on a help the team. Unlike the other fb

                  Little harsh.

I thought going forward he looked very good but his defensive skills will need improvement.

All in all for me for the first game at the massive club with huge expectations I thought he did ok.

He barely had any practice time with the squad and had a debut in a completely different league vs last year champs away, which cannot get much more difficult.

This kid is talented and once he adjusts to the pace and the physical aspect of PL and learns how BR wants him to play he could be a very good player for us.

What I find amusing is that people say that the fault of the first goal was due to playing in the PL. But at the same time, people say that Jovetic can't adapt either. So regardless a bit of a contradiction, tbh that could've happened in any league.

Agreed. Swinging the wrong foot at the ball while half asleep was hardly cos he's new to the league. He messed up, it happens.

cant blame the lad for that, he's only got the one foot.

Maybe worded a little harsh alright but didn't play well from that rash challenge onwards IMO.

I watched Moreno a lot last year so i know what he's like as a player. Quick, good technique & very aggressive. All good quality for the premier league. On the flip side, he's poor in the air, needs work on his positioning & can be very rash with his tackling going to ground.

I have zero problems with Moreno to be honest, said before that i don't think we'll see the best of him until next season. Last night was a baptism of fire for the poor bugger but he was poxy for a vital goal. But yeah pissy night against the best team in England, no doubts he'll improve once he adapts

Can't argue with much of this from Neil Jones...

Alberto Moreno will have learnt plenty from his Liverpool FC baptism of fire

If it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger, apparently. And in Alberto Moreno’s case, plenty will have been taken from a first brush with English football.

It ended in disappointment, of course. And injury. The Spaniard left the Etihad Stadium limping, and with heavy strapping on his right ankle. He could miss Liverpool’s trip to Tottenham this Sunday.

Also damaged, one suspects, will have been the 22-year-old’s pride. If the Premier League is one big learning curve for a young defender, then he started it at the highest point possible.

There are few more demanding places to make your debut. Manchester City, focused, ruthless and packed with quality, are reigning champions for a reason.

On Monday night, they were determined to target Liverpool’s new-boy, to test him. A graphic shown on Sky Sports after the game showed that 51% of City’s attacks had come down Moreno’s flank.

That’s a huge number, considering the spread of talent Manuel Pellegrini has at his disposal. But the tactic gave City all three of their goals on the night and, for Brendan Rodgers, provided plenty of food for thought.

Moreno, in fairness, was not solely to blame. But he was caught napping by Stevan Jovetic for City’s first and, having tracked Yaya Toure away from goal, then failed to recover his position quickly enough for their second.

The third, created by Jesus Navas for Sergio Aguero, was about a quality pass and a clinical finish as much as anything else.

Harsh lessons. The Premier League is an unforgiving place, and makes no allowances for newcomers. Moreno, you feel, can only benefit from a night such as this.

He will also, one hopes, have taken some positives from his performance too. There was certainly enough there to suggest that Liverpool have acquired themselves a good footballer.

In the first half, with his side the more assured, he looked comfortable in possession, and had both the speed and willingness to get forward and try to influence the game in the final third. One run, in particular, saw him burn Samir Nasri for pace, delivering a low cross that eventually won the Reds a corner.

And even in the second period, as things unravelled, there were flashes of quality. He linked up neatly with Lazar Markovic, another debutant, in almost providing Jordan Henderson with a sight of goal at one end, and denied Edin Dzeko with a smart covering challenge at the other. He is quick, has a good touch and can travel with the ball.

He showed character, too, to continue despite clearly, and painfully, rolling his ankle late on. A small thing, perhaps, but one which will help endear him to Reds supporters.

Make no mistake, Moreno is an important signing for Liverpool. Left back has been a problem position for longer than most would care to remember, and the club worked hard this summer to thrash out a deal with Sevilla for their top target. They know there is plenty more to come from him.

“He’ll learn,” said Rodgers afterwards. “He wasn’t the finished article when we brought him in, we knew there were certain areas we needed to work on, but that’s something our eyes are wide open to.”

One for the long term, certainly, but expect him to improve quickly as he settles into life at Anfield. And expect him to have learnt a lot from his first taste of life at the Premier League’s sharp end.

It won’t kill him, but it might just make him stronger.
I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
                            Mine angry and defrauded young?

Yep, thought he linked up well with Markovic for a spell and showed great pace too. As the article says hopefully that debut will have taught him all he needs to know about the Premier League and will benefit him in the long run.

Hope he will be fit for Spurs. His debut at City was impressive.

The lad has good ability, good passing and showed strength. Unfortunate with their 1st goal but he will improve.

I think we have a lb for many years with this lad.
