Honestly, and I can understand why others would disagree, I still do believe with some time away in the summer to refocus and plan, we do have a lot of the building blocks needed and a manager in post who has proven he can get this team to overperform when things go right. If this can be a learning experience, and if we finally get it right in the market this summer (those are big ifs admittedly), I personally see enough positive in the totality of Rodgers' time at the club to want to give him another season.

Many fans look back on Rafa's last season now and state that he could and should have been given another year, but I remember (and the old threads are there as proof) some utterly drab and listless performances then that seemed to indicate the dressing room was no longer responding etc. I know Benitez had a lot more in the bank particularly in terms of European performance, and I'm not trying to rake over old coals again, but I do think that sometimes it is hard to appreciate quite what you have until it is gone.

Last season was just so good it was probably the most fun I've had watching league football since 1988, and there are so many other things I like about Rodgers (some of which I seem to be in a real minority about, I find him quite personable), and enough potential in the squad too, that I'm loathe not to let him have this season on credit and give him the next to really prove what he's made of.

One difference between this season & Rafa's last - he wanted a centre half and the Cowboys gave him 1.5m for Kyrgiakos. Brendan spent £20m on Lovren. Rafa was royally ****ed over & his reputation shat on by Fergies media lapdogs. Brendan's in a ****fest of his own making.

I noticed when the pressure has mounted recently that Rodgers likes to emphasise the words young, youth & learning. That's the difference though, balance. We never got the balance right with our transfers... no experience or leaders. We never got the balance with formations, chopping, changing and guessing.. hoping something would click.... apart from our purple patch & we never got the balance with the 11 on the pitch. Too many squad players regularly in the starting 11, too many young inexperienced players in the starting 11 & too many players playing in different positions, in different formations, with different tactics. It's been a real mess.

The balance has been off right from the get go. Performances,tactics and formations too. Rodgers couldn't learn what his best team was or what formation to play them in.

Real kick in the bollox this season has been. Was the perfect chance to cement a place in the top 4. Now i can't see is getting back in the champs league for a long time. Whatever about the transfer debacle Rodgers or the committee.... the role of a manager is to get the best out of the players under him... and he didn't. The buck stops with him.

I really wanted Rodgers to do well but yeah I think it's time for us to part ways.

Good post. I dont have as much support for Brendan as you have, but I guess the key would be who was responsible for the summer transfers. It would be really unfair and similar to throwing the baby with the bathwater, if Brendan loses his job with the transfer committee being more responsible for our strikers this season.

If it were up to me, I am leaning towards firing him in summer but there is a nagging doubt at the back of my mind - He was one Gerrard slip away from the greatest achievement of the last 25 years.

Rafa made plenty mistakes of his own making too, great though he was.

I said it wasn't a direct comparison anyway, of course there are differences in circumstance, I mean everyone knows Rafa had Houllier's CL winning side to build on

Good thing is it's still only worth zero points to us, so its ultimately the same as a glorious defeat.

We just looked confused. Lots of people struggling to play where they've been asked to play. Doing simple things wrong. Depressing. We are playing like we have done before Rafa, Ged and Hodgson got sacked.

A handful of more successful managers have attempted to get the best from Balotelli and have also failed. Why should Rodgers have to sacrifice his whole footballing ethos to try and get the best out of one player that would be to the detriment of what he has been trying to instill for three years?

You slam Rodgers for not giving Markovic game time and then in your very next sentence you're slamming Rodgers for doing just that with Lovren. And the former has three times the competition for places.

All this Rafa chat and it's just not going to happen.

The point about perisiting with Gerrard is a odd one. He did until around late October and then he got injured and has hardly played since then.

This Rafa debate will go on for years. He clearly has unfinished business here, and the fans with him. But he isnt really relevant to us losing to Hull.
