Maybe, but the sides above us are going to do the same, except they'll be buying better players more often than we do.

Very difficult to surpass them in that scenario, the players we go after, our main targets, just are not coming here.

Even City having been taken over by ££££$$$ took around 5 years (might be including Shinawatra in that time scale) to get to the top, and had to pay silly money to get a certain calibre of player to go there.

Went to the game and although we played better than them, we shouldn't get too carried away as Chelsea seemed a bit pedestrian and, unsurprisingly, were probably not as motivated in these circumstances.

Obviously, Johnson has to go but I'm really not sure about Skrtel and Mignolet too Their decision making is second grade and it's not something that's going to change. You either have it or you don't.

We have more glaring areas that need fixing at the moment but, tbh, we're never going to be solid at the back with those two playing as permanent fixtures in the starting 11.

Thought Skrtel was brilliant yesterday & I was a bit critic of Mignolet, but to be fair to him he has massively improved in 2015. His distribution is a problem though but he does command the box a lot better than previous.

If his distribution was better I'd be all for him to be the number one for the next five to ten years. But its garbage. Look at the keepers who play for the top clubs, all have excellent distribution.

If we pass to Mignolet we are basically conceding possession. He takes to long to control and make a short pass so we are easily closed down, whilst his long range kicking accuracy is abysmal. He just doesn't suit our style.

All that being said, he is definitely not near the top of the list of players that need replacing. Big improvement in other areas has kept him safe and he gets another season to show he can improve.
                Forwards.......

All well and good saying that but you've got to find someone that will improve the position which is not just easier said than done but will also have a knock on effect to other areas of the pitch we need desperately to recruit for i.e. strikers.

Basically we have more pressing issues.

I did say we have more pressing issues, but I just wanted to add my two cents that we're always going to be vulnerable with Skrtel and Mignolet at the back.

Mignolet is error prone and Skrtel can be clumsy. Sorry but that is just fact.

That's more or less how I feel.

Nonetheless I'm of the opinion that if we could sort out the defense it would help the midfield be more creative and hence make more different striking options effective for us. Any signing(s) that made that happen would repay the investment IMO.

its no good worrying about mig not being world class, or thinking we could do better than skrtel. at the moment we are ok but not great at the back but we are unlikely to score. this is more of an issue. for all the so called 'creative/attacking midfielders' we couldnt score at a rohypnol sponsored christmas party.

its like saying we need a better picture in the hallway but not sorting out the massive hole in the roof.

Mignolet has 13 clean sheets this season. He is not the problem. Its the ones in front of him who panic and put him under pressure.

Sure he isnt world class, but there are not many of those about at the moment.

scoring goals is definitely the number one priority.
