Not enough clearly. Or maybe he just doesn't have the elite mentality that a top footballer needs and for that reason he needs moving on?

We need better than both to be fair if we want to gwt ahead.

      Gvardiol can hopefully join

We seem to have moved on from 'the ageing midfield is the problem' to 'the defence and the midfield both need a complete rebuild'. Sticking around to see when we go the full monty with 'the whole team needs to be scrapped and we need to start over again.'

Painful last night and Gomez was dire. So was Fabinho again and throw in a couple of glaring errors for each of their goals... it was a cluster**** performance from the fifteenth minute onwards. We just lost our heads, played emotional football rather than having some sort of in-game management plan.

We're talking about 'we need to win by three, likely four at the Bernabeau' but in all honesty, I can see us getting pumped again there as well...

I think a lot of the team might need a rebuild to be honest. I think the rest of the season might be a trial for a number of players. We know that there will be a fair few additions this summer anyway because of the guys out of contract. Also, the rebuild is ongoing already. Mane Gini have gone. Gakpo and Nunez have joined.

I was sure that a few of our players - Robbo, Mo, Trent - would have had good second halves of the season after the world cup break. (when trent looked like he wouldn't make england squad) but they've actually been a lot worse if anything.

The midfield is dire, improve that and I believe things will improve significantly more protection for the defence and hopefully more goal threat from the forwards. There are issues elsewhere in the team, I don't think that the defence is as good as it was when we won the CL and then the title, I'm not convinced that the forward line has as many goals in it either, but these problems are very much secondary to the midfield, I feel we can live with the players we have in defence and attack for now if we sort midfield properly.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

The lads need to focus on Palace and get an away win. The Wolves game will be a turgid rerun of all the other Wolves games this season... but they 1000% need their ****ing heads turned around and facing the right way when United stroll into Anfield. I'm not having us put on a ****show like last night against these 'world beaters under Ten Hag' from down the M62...

SO NO REASON TO CRITICISE HIM SO FAR.

Gave away cheap free kick LIKE MOST DEFENDERS DO OCCASIONALLY and then statuesque AS WERE THE REST OF THE DEFENCE for third, WITH TRENT ALLOWING THE SCORER TO RUN OFF HIM WITHOUT ANY ATTEMPT TO BLOCK HIM

SO NO REASON TO SINGLE HIM OUT FROM THE REST FOR CRITICISM SO FAR

In off his arse for forth. WITH THE SCORER LEFT UNMARKED, PRIMARILY BECAUSE FAB'S RECOVERY RUN TOOK HIM TOO DEEP INTO THE DEFENCE AND VVD WAS POSITIONED TOO DEEP

Looked lost tracking back after Fabinho gave the ball away for fifth AND AFTER VVD MOVED ONTO THE MAN GOMEZ WAS RACING BACK TO TRY TO CHALLENGE, FORCING HIM TO GO OVER TO VVD'S MAN..

A shocker from Gomez AND THE REST OF THE TEAM IN THE SECOND HALF tonight.
                I fixed it for you.

I am not trying to defend Gomez; I just get fed up with him being singled out when actually others were as much/more to blame. Fab made big mistakes for the 4th and 5th goals, the third was a1 failure of the whole defensive system we used for the free kick and the second was Ali's shocker; yes Gomez was there or thereabouts for all those goals but he is a defender so he should be.

The thing a lot of people overlook with Gomez is that he is generally not our second choice CB when all are fit. He is usually our third or fourth choice CB.

He was excellent in the title winning season and as a 3rd or 4rd choice (who is also decent cover at RB) he is a no brainer to keep.

Looking at other top teams he is as good as any of their 3th/4th choice CBs and exactly the sort of depth we need to have.

Bigger issue for me is that Matip and Konate are very injury prone for us and VVD has seen a dramatic fall off in form (by the standards he set of course, by "regular" standards VVD is still a good CB).

We seem to be sleep walking towards needing to freshen up our CB options before we have even gotten around to soprting out our midfield.

If there was a bid for him, I would be moving on Matip this summer and trying to bring in a durable starter quality CB. Let Konate and VVD battle to start beside the new guy and Gomez remains as cover for CB and RB.

If Konate was priving to one less injury prone I would even be starting him ahead of VVD now as Konate is our only consistently dominant CB this season.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

I worry about how he was outfought for the third Brentford goal and in that incident late on in the Brighton cup game where he could have ended up red-carded. For a man of his speed and size, he should be able to handle such one on ones if he is to be regarded as our number one central defender. Yes he is young and after one f those games he was declared injured so maybe that affected him, but I'd like to be more confident of him in those positions.

Matip should in my view be part of the 'start the refresh' activity this summer, so shouldn't be even a squad member next in my view. (I DO love him though.)

He's inconsistent but in Konate's absence he's the quickest defender. VVD is nowhere near as fast as he was (hence a lessor defender) and playing a high line requires speed when breached or exposed (partic with wingbacks up front half the time)

Jaco turns on turns on Fifa.

Gvardiol, Jurrien Timber and Bastoni in then.

Gvaridol and Bastoni to add some left footers to our CB selection and Timber because he is fast and can play at CB and RB.

Would love to see us get Gvardiol though.

No point in playing a high line or high pressing when nobody has pace

That’s fair, but it was one of his worst nights. He was trying hard, he was just over run.

I’m happy to have him as 4th choice. It is just a shame because he looked so good a few years ago, and when we got konate in, I was thinking Gomez is too good to be sitting on the bench, but it seems that’s his level now.
                              I don't tip
