He's been our most important player for me. Would have been fecked without him.Originally posted by Doc_Piptorious View PostAnother cracking perfromance from Gomez. At this rate he will be in the running for the club's player of the season.
Has been as consistent as Alisson this season and for the most part has been putting in performances of the same level.

Just had a mad thought: we keep going on about Gomez scoring this season, he's the only player to have played all through Klopp's whole time here, he couldn't be the one to score the season defining goal could he?
Not likely but if you are looking for fairytale endings...The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

He's gonna be our Kompany with a crucial goal in one of the remaining matches this season!Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostJust had a mad thought: we keep going on about Gomez scoring this season, he's the only player to have played all through Klopp's whole time here, he couldn't be the one to score the season defining goal could he?

I've been wondering where Joe fits into our starting 11 when everyone is fit
When we have Robertson/Tsimikas & Trent/Bradley available at full back, it only really leaves that 3rd/4th CB spot as an option for Joe.
I think he's shown recently that he's too good to be a squad player which got me thinking about his suitability as a defensive midfielder
When you think about it, he's going all the tools in his locker to make this work:
Great defensively and reads the game well
Doesn't get dribbled past easily
He's physical and doesn't get bullied
Decent passer
He's got great recovery pace (something out current 6s lack!)
Has shown he can adapt quickly (has already impressed at CB, LB and RB)
He's also still young and I think will continue to improve

Players tend to shift further back as they get older, think honestly that that ship would've sailed.

If we go on form, then when everyone is fit it is up to the players coming back to oust Joe rather than him just having to step aside.
He has been playing too well to simply be dropped for a returning player who may or may not hit the ground running at the level Gomez is putting in week in week out.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Fabinho played RB until he was 23Originally posted by Norbs View PostThat's middle aged for a footballer
John Barnes dropped in to CM as he got older IIRC, Mascerano played CB for Barcelona but I can't recall anyone who went on to play further upfield, except Bale
Gareth Barry started off as a defender
Salah started off as a left back
Lahm started off as a full back
Marquinos moved from defence to midfield
Kimmich started as a RB and moved to midfield
We are constantly talking about moving Trent into midfield
Gerrard produced his best displays after he was moved forwardLast edited by rudedog; 07-02-24, 12:41 PM.

We are constantly talking about moving TAA in to midfield but never Gonez. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, it's certainly.save us a lot of money

I've been a critic of Gomez but credit where is it due, he has played well since coming in & it would be harsh to drop him just because other lads are fit. Likes of Robbo has been way below his best for a long time now and must earn his way back into the team. What is the point in having a competitive squad, if when you do well, you just get binned when the other player is fit.

I think Joe has greater value (for now) as our utility back - he is capable of playing anywhere across the back four. He has been great at LB, and has performed the hybrid role from the left with Conor being more of a RWB.Originally posted by Norbs View PostCan't believe I forgot about Gerrard starting at RB.

For me, the only reason Robbo has an easy route back to the starting 11 is because Joe is so important as back-up CB with Joel being out.We are here for a good time not a long time....
