It's a difficult one for a backup keeper now, with Mignolet and Karius they were at similar levels so both could realistically believe they would be first choice. Now we have Alisson he is clearly first choice so anyone else is clearly a backup, would either Karius or Mignolet want to stay in those circumstances? If not, what happens do we sign another keeper who is happy to be back up?

Karius really needs games to get his confidence back and his career back on track so keeping him as backup doesn't really suit anyone IMO.

he's going to stay but I think he should go out and get games under his belt in Italy or somewhere.

We should have a fairly difficult CL group being pot 3 so I think its domestic cups only for him.

It really is a bit of a ropey situation underneath all the celebration. Mig really has to go, but I'm surprised that Ward is being allowed to leave..........thats just from a club point of view.
Karius on the other hand probably figures he won the No.1 jersey and was his until 'it' happened - just can't understand how he wouldn't want to move on now and re-establish himself elsewhere.
It's a completely different situation to a midfielder aiming to fight for a starting spot - you've basically become a professional sub goalkeeper after today. Alisson will play in the league and CL - maybe Karius will be happy playing a few cup games leaving more time to work on social media ****e, but all things considered, a loan move, minimum, would be by far the best thing for his future career IMO.

It seems that a lot has happened in GK terms over the last couple of weeks. Coming into preseason I think that we were going to back Karius as No1 probably with Ward as backup and ship Mignolet out.

After the preseason games it became clear that Karius wasn't in a good place mentally and we were looking for a new keeper, and there was talk of Ward starting. Personally I don't believe we were ever going into the season with Ward as No1 but I think that he could have been backup to Alisson, but I think that the offer for Ward was too good to refuse (he too needs to get games to develop). Karius needs to rebuild confidence, but I'm not sure that something like a max of 10 games spread over a whole season (as cup keeper here) will do that for him. Might be tempted to send Karius out on loan and keep Mignolet as backup for a year.

              We could have gone from
1.Karius, 2.Ward, 3.Mignolet to 1.Alisson, 2.Mignolet and Ward and Karius gone within a couple of weeks

                  Good stuff Lorisk.

Sticking around will be by far the best decision you could make.

You wouldn't let him pick a baby up would you? Honestly, done with feeling sorry for him, he's earning good money and shouldn't be in the profession really.

Yup. Mug him off and Gomez can fill in when Robbo needs a rest.
