Conversely....let's not forget Matip grabbing Janssen though as well in the first half, which could have been given if it was opening day and Mike Dean reffing the game.

Normal service regarding holding etc has been resumed earlier than expected - sure even Leicester were done out of one against Swansea.

With that one Janseen ran into Matip and the grabbing with pretty even. Also the ball wasn't that close to either. It would have been very soft.

Would have been a car crash watching Skrtel adapting to thsee rules.

More Matip standing in his way, which is fine, but he started grabbing him as Janssen was getting around him which is playing it very close to the wire with regard to not just these 'new' rules, but existing ones. If you're going to give a pen for these set piece incidents, that one is crystal clear.
Don't get me wrong, the one for us down the other end should have been penalized if they want the consistency of these new guidelines, but is anyone really surprised to see it not being enforced after only a couple of weeks.

The subtle snide posts about Matip from Marty's two biggest fans are quite amusing.

This is my reasoning: having seen the replay it seems that TV can't really tell with any degree of certainty whether it was on or offside, even when they stop play and draw lines on the pitch, given that the linesman has to give the benefit of any doubt to the attacking side and level is onside, I don't see how the linesman can have seen it as offside in real time given that it is almost impossible to tell in slow-motion. All he can have done is guessed which makes it a poor decision.

Given the way that the rules are laid out you should never see goals wrongly ruled out for offside, only goals allowed to stand that were offside, because of this benefit of the doubt. If the linesman doesn't see it as offside he can't give it as offside and the goal should stand, with the one today he can't have seen it as offside so the goal should stand.

I like the reasoning, but it was technically the right call no matter how fortunate. Sure they miss those close ones plenty of times as well when the benefit just happens to fall the other way. There's no doubt there's an element of guesswork involved as anyone who's ran the line could attest to, even at that level.
Being honest, I got the feeling it was offside as the ball was slipped through, but when there wasn't an immediate stoppage, I had that split second of celebration and it seemed an age before the whistle went.
On replay though, the linesman has the flag up just before or after Lallana slides the ball across.

Pain in the arse, but we'll probably get the benefit at some point in the season.

For me, we are playing good stuff. To be 5 points behind after 3 games is a bit of a pain in the arse but guess what....the likes of arsenal spurs man city, united and Chelsea will all start to play each other and take points off each other too....

We look good on the break and hopefully the likes of origi firmino mane sturridge can all start scoring goals.

What we achieve this season will depend on how successful we manage to break teams that rock up at anfield and park the bus. We failed on the first test of that away to Burnley but let's not just assume we can't do it.

This international break might actually be a good thing for us as well......gives a chance for players like Can, Lucas, Sakho, Coutinho all to get back to full fitness.

It is, but a point was made last night on one of the highlight shows that the ref did not blow the whistle when the ball was out of play.

The incident happened, Matip hit the deck, still no whistle, then Henderson takes the corner and it is at that point when the ref blows his whistle.

Not sure if it has any bearing in relation to the rules but the ref had to stop play in order to issue his warning and by doing so he made it an in play ref action rather than an out of play ref action.

Course they will. Every team gets a couple of runs of tough looking fixtures against the big clubs, so there will be plenty of time to make up points against the big clubs near the top of the table.

To be honest I am not too concerned about the so called tough fixtures against the other big clubs as we can more than hold our own there. It is the supposed weaker clubs and our habit of switching off against them that worries me a little.

Do well against the big teams and the 'small' sides and that's what delivers us the league..........hold our own in the big matches and win the smaller games and that's what gives CL places and title challenges.
Not picking up available points against the 'rest' especially at home is what will kill us this season, so we need to be on our game every weekend. There's going to be plenty of results like what ManU had last night that'll be important at the end of the day......we need to improve on that massively this season.

Will have to have a look again. I think it's more about when the offence happens rather than whether play is stopped, although you'd think the ref has ****ed it to stop play for something that has happened ahead of it.

Klopp said something about how he'd prefer if the ref just watched the situation and if it continued when the ball is in play then blow for a pen. Of course I'd have loved the same but it seems this is a way of encouraging people to obey the rules without penalising the attacking team. We still get to take the corner at no disadvantage after all.

The point about the ref not blowing until after the ball has gone in is an interesting one though, as that potentially can disadvantage you. If I'm honest whilst I felt it was an obvious pen at the time, now the dust has settled I'm not convinced we were hard done by.

While we're on the sky commentary team - when did Danny Murphy become such a total bellend?

I thought the ref had a total stinker today, apart from the penalty he did give us.

Yeah I am not quite as set on it being a stonewall peno myself as I was when I saw the first in game replays, but I am wondering if the ref waiting until the ball was in play before blowing his whistle changed it to being an in game matter.

As you say it does potentially disadvantage the attacking team to stop an attacking play like a corner just as the ball is kicked, and by stopping the game just as it was back in progress should have brought the normal sanctions that an in play ref stoppage would normally bring, or so my train of thought thinks anyway.

Of course it is easier for us to pick apart this things with the benefit of hindsight, multiple replays, and no small amount of bias than it is for a ref who get one look at the incident and then maybe grabs his whistle a second or two later than he meant to do.

I have a feeling that the Matip challenge in our box was also ignored by the ref by way of him trying to even things out, which again would be awful reffing as an even things out mentality should never come into it. Each incident should simply be judged on it's own merits.
