Not sure, had this discussion yesterday.

To me he always looks in control when doing it, rather than going nuts and then composing himself at teh last minute, so I just assumed it was symbolic or he was taking the piss as it's a crappy rule.

I think it came in because people were taking off their shirts to reveal a message underneath - like Fowler's in support of the dockers.

But where that isn't the intention, I agree it seems somewhat unnecessary to be chucking cards around.

in fact looks like the 5 yellows end earlier this season 31st of December, second Sunday in April for 10. Bobby obviously knew this rule change on Saturday.

I'd argue it isn't fully removed yet and therefore the ball crossed the line before it came a bookable offence.
