This is almost always true with any U23 group, the point of playing them in these sort of games partly being to see who (if any) look capable of stepping up. If one or two actually end up as first team regulars we'll have done pretty well.

We probably do long term, but until today I don't think we really have over the season so far. Without being in Europe it was pretty sensible to thin the squad down this season and then build it up again over future windows as it becomes evident which (if any) of the U23s can step up and where we need to buy.

It's sink or swim right from the off

They won't get too many chances so have to be tip top in virtually every game they play

That's the reality of the game nowadays

Klopp clearly hasn't prioritised the FA cup hence it's the youngest average age side we've ever put out today.

We've used the players we have at the moment, he probably isn't good enough for the long term but that's where we are.

And you can stop being sensible as well

I think we trimmed down too much

It's a little too thin for my liking

That may well be good going forward only time will tell

Well I'm really pleased with Klopp's decision all of today. Shame the youngsters didn't show too much but these are the games you learn.

Now the real business starts. Have to ensure we do the bare minimum against Southampton and then beat or draw with Utd. January is not too bad so far. : handshake:

So on one hand you're saying we've got too many players that aren't good enough to make it whilst then stating we've thinned the squad down too much

Who would you have kept then that would have made a difference to the quality of our squad ?

I reckon Klopp sees Kev Stewart as backup until the summer at which point we will definitely need more strength in depth.

Watching us today you realise how important a player Jordan Henderson is, loads of our play starts with him, he moves the ball accurately and fast. Without him we lack the ability to change the direction of attack at pace. Backup for him is surely a priority.

The result is disappointing but nil nil can happen. What is frustrating is we didn't pepper their goal. We weren't unlucky. Our main striker had zero threat on their goal. Origi like lukaku seems to have games he doesn't look interested. Neither have any fire in their bellies. Must be a Belgium thing. They both have all the attributes.

This system of one up top works for the most part when we are at full strength but it does struggle against packed defences. Utd held us by parking the bus. Others have tried. We need a plan b, a different way of playing against certain setups. A younger crouch type just to hold the ball up at times. We are very pretty but lack guile or just sheer force. Zlatsn is a beast in the air. Costa is pretty good. We have nowt.

Was good to see gomez back. Thought Woodburn had nice touches and kept the ball moving quickly. TAA looked OK as well. Karius had nice hair.
