Good variation of views there.
Personally, I get the viewpoint that we won’t pay him silly money, but at the same time, football is heading in that direction. Elite world superstars WILL command wages of £400k or more per week, that will gradually become the going rate. If we can’t live in that world, what does it say about our status as a club and where we sit in the food chain?
Ultimately, and I know this might be unpopular, but if we can’t afford elite players (and I’m not talking about signing the M’Bappes or Messis of this world, this is a player we already have at our club), then are the owners financially powerful enough to keep us at the top of the game?
They got us there (with much help from Klopp) and that’s a great achievement but if football moves forward at a pace they’re unable to sustain, then surely we either move on from them or get left behind.
I don’t want us to go back to the days of having to sell our best players. Whether it’s because our club cannot match their ambition or whether it’s because we can’t match their financial requirements. And let’s be honest here, we aren’t talking about a greedy player asking for stupid money in this scenario. You could feasibly list Mo Salah as being one of the world’s best 4 or 5 players at the moment. £400k per week for that, isn’t radical, given the market rate.
