I just don’t have a great deal of confidence in FSG going to anywhere around the reported £400,000 a week he’s asking for.

Can see them putting him ahead of Virgil’s £220,000 (before bonuses) with the rest being achievable in performance/win bonuses. But apparently Salah wants it as a guaranteed wage, not performance related.

I think a big fear factor for FSG is age...he is 30 now, and you rarely see forwards maintain their peak levels past 32ish (Ronaldo and Messi being the exceptions, but even their levels dropped significantly). Do they risk him hitting a cliff and end up paying £400k+ per week to a player no longer capable of doing the necessary work for the club? Or do they hope that given his fitness levels, we have another Milner on our hands, capable of playing at the top for another 4+ years before slowly being utilised as a sub?

Splitting hairs a bit but he is 29. He will be 30 next June.

Whatever happens we’d have to replace him with a big signing and a big contract. Sometimes it is prudent to have an eye on what is happening right now and not always be building and looking to the future.

Even ignoring the fact that Mo is a machine and should have a longer career than most mortals, with modern science and players looking after themselves so much better, 30 isn't the same benchmark it was 10+ years ago in football.

When Madrid bought the likes of Zidane and Figo, they were 28/29 which I would say is equivalent to 30/31 in the modern game.

I recently listed all the recent Ballon D'or and golden boot winners and the lists were dominated by players in their 30's. There is absolutely no reason to believe that Mo won't be heavily involved in all these awards for the next 4-5 years.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

If we try to replace like for like we'd be looking at someone like Haaland or Mbappe to get close to his current level, they would demand similar (if not higher) wages and would require either a transfer fee and/or a big signing on fee. And a few years down the road if they have progressed they would be demanding even bigger contacts. From that perspective a new contract for Mo looks the cheaper option.

The alternative is we don't replace like for like and use the money saved (or raise if we sold him) to bring in players in other positions (like we did bringing in Alisson and VVD when we sold Coutinho) but that requires us to already have someone in the squad to step up, and while you could argue we could go with Jota, Mane and Firmino, with all due respect that feels like a sizeable step down from where we are at the Mo (pun intended )
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I feel like it will get done though. They’ll prob announce it over the January window to keep us happy, same way they did with hendos contract on deadline day… but in this instance it would actually work, for me at least, haha
As brilliant as Torres and Suarez were for us, they were never talked about as the best player in the world which Salah is right now. That is not just the LFC fans talking, it is the media, opposition fans, everyone has started to acknowledge him as the best in the world. A very unique situation for us as a club.

I think a three year deal at £350,000 a week sounds about right. He should be able to maintain these levels for at least three years.

We would be back to being a team who can't/won't do what we need to in order to get to/stay at the top. I suspect that would piss off the fans, manager and make other players question their futures.
