I think Mane will leave this summer for a decent price, and be replaced. Salah will then go on a free next year and again be replaced. Who those replacements will be is anyone's guess, but I have a feeling we've granted Mane his wish to leave and Salah is happy to stay and give one more year. Interesting he's made this choice now that Mbappe is staying at PSG. Maybe that was where he was lined up to go!

Sell him if Mane stays. If Mane goes then sell him.

If I had to bet, it would be on this scenario

I don't see us nor any business turning down what, £70m; if we're sure he's off

I could see us letting players leave, but Mo is too valuable. I almost think he's too valuable to buy too, who can pay what he's worth and him not be that clubs talisman. Madrid (who is their RW) and PSG as they can apparently afford it
I saw a dead fish on the pavement and thought "what did you expect?"

Who's in a position to spend £70m on Mane, especially when they can get him free next year? I think £40-50m is more realistic. Whether we accept that depends on whether his contribution for another season is worth more to us. I think probably not and we've already got a replacement lined up.

Means he wants to leave on a free, essentially.

              Do we sell him now?

I guess it depends on who we can get to replace him. None of our current players can play on the right, and even Carvalho is left sided.

Question is, who else will want a 31 year old on 500k a week anyway?

For the sake of balance in our team and the way with like to play, then if we think he is going to run his contract down and leave, I would prefer us to have his replacement brought in this summer or in January at the latest.

Let the new guy get bedded in whilst Salah is there and if the new guy hit the ground running in a big way, we would have Salah as a super sub or able to play in a more central attacking role a la Mane.

Waiting for the summer of 2023 to replace him if he wants out is more of a risk imo.

Still think one of Bowen, Antony or Raphinha are the obvious choices (to a footy fan that is) to bring in (and in that order), all left footers that are at their best on the right wing.

Will be an interesting summer this one though. Think it is Salah, Mane, Keita and Firmino all with 12 months left on their contracts?

Didn't United just spunk £500k a week on Ronaldo on a free...? And similar with Cavani? There are these 'old giants' of football who would entertain a player like Mo on £500k a week with no fee, for sure. If he just wants one final massive payday, maybe the Geordies will go all out for him by this time next summer...

We will need a striker to replace potentially Mane this summer and Mo next... plus a decent backup with Div going... a few ageing players coming to the end of their contracts in the next couple of years, so we've obviously got investment to make in a few places...

That's right. I think Ox has 12 months left as well (though not 100% sure on that one)

I have to say the comment from Mane about announcing his future after the CL suggested to me that it has been decided, if it was that we were starting discussions about a new contract he would have said that. Likewise if he had already agreed a new contract it would have been announced as a 'pre CL final boost'. I think he's wanting to go somewhere else amd a deal has already been agreed. I think it's been coming for a while that's why we haven't said we are in discussions with him over a new contract. Diaz has been brought in as his replacement. It makes the announcement that Salah's staying at least another year make sense too.

I don't think the plan was ever to have 5 top forwards, as I say Diaz is Mane's replacement, we only brought him in early because we had to, because of Spurs interest. I think we go into next season without bringing another forward in unless someone else leaves as well.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I also yhink Diaz is a Mane replacement. I think we need a Firmino replacement this summer. Be nice to get a Salah one too before he goes.

That is all on top of a couple of midfielders .

So all we need is Martinez in for Firmino, Bowen (hi Harv ) for Salah before Salah goes and a couple of quality midfielders (Let's say Barella and Bellingham for the craic) and we are sorted?

Though that would still leave us needing cover for Fab, though I suppose we could use Henderson as Fab's back up if there was enough quality elsewhere in CM to cover the ground ahead of him.

Easey peasey this transfer lark. Can we get Nkunku in for ****s and giggles too?

Probably more chance of someone like Laimer coming in as a jack of all trades CM as he is entering the final 12 months of his contract.

interesting BBC article, which is probably more relevant in this thread than anywhere else, either here or in the Mane thread.

Footballers calling for limit on back-to-back games over burnout fears

Players and coaches are calling for a limit to the number of 'back-to-back' games to protect them from burnout.

Almost nine in 10 players who took part in a survey for global footballers' union Fifpro believe that limit should be six matches or fewer.

Fifpro also says players should be limited to 55 matches over a season.

"Players and coaches are telling us that too many matches, across too many overlapping competitions, are pushing us to our physical limits," it added.

Fifpro's chief medical officer Prof Vincent Gouttebarge said: "This kind of working environment is conducive to the development of mental health problems."

And the body's Americas representative, Inter Milan and Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal, said he fears the "accumulated exposure puts us at risk as players, it can reduce our performance and may also shorten many players' careers".

Fifpro carried out the survey on the back of its Player Workload Monitoring Platform, which it manages alongside data company Football Benchmark. The tool, launched last year, is designed to track the workloads professional players are facing.

Data for Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane - who in Saturday's Champions League final could both play their 70th game of the season, including pre-season - shows they have each played 60% of their games 'back-to-back', or in what Fifpro calls the 'critical zone'. This means making two appearances of at least 45 minutes with fewer than five days in between.

Luka Modric, who could face Liverpool for opponents Real Madrid in Saturday's final in Paris, played 24 matches in a row at the end of 2020 in the 'critical zone'.

Of the 1,055 players surveyed, 87% backed the limitation of 'critical zone' involvement, while 54% said they had suffered injuries due to excessive workloads.

Half of the players surveyed said that their season breaks were often infringed upon by their clubs or national teams.

The report cites the example of Spain's Mikel Oyarzabal, who played at Euro 2020 and then travelled to the Tokyo Olympics, before playing in Real Sociedad's first game of the season eight days after the Olympic final.

Almost 50% of players would like to see longer but less frequent international breaks in order to reduce travel.

Having played in the Africa Cup of Nations as well as for a Liverpool side who have completed every possible fixture this season, Salah and Mane have averaged 90,000 kilometres of travel between them.

High-performance coaches were also surveyed and one, from the Eredivisie, claimed that players need time to recover if fans want to see the highest quality on a regular basis.

"If we want to provide football fans worldwide with spectacular matches with a high level of creativity, intensity and decision-making skills, we need to provide the players during the in-season with sufficient opportunity for recovery on a physical, mental and spiritual level," they told researchers.

"We need time to recharge the battery."

That’s the drum that Klopp has been banging for a long time now.

The response seems to be to expand existing competitions by adding more games to the CL and Euro’s and introducing pointless new competitions like the Nations League.

for the likes of FIFA and UEFA it's all about money, expansion of the WC and Euros, wanting more CL games etc. New competitions Nations league, Europa Conference etc
