Yet again no sign of him being "double marked", "heavily marked" or otherwise being the subject of special attention from opponents. Also no sign of Elliot getting in his way.

He just doesn’t have it anymore. Lost some pace, lost some confidence, lost some hunger. Just an average winger, and has been for quite some time.

The drop off in the younger guys is more worrying imho.
Salah is still getting into dangerous positions and getting goals/assists albeit at a "normal" rate than a WC one.
Some of the players younger than Salah seemed to be switched off a lot of the time, seem less inclined to bust a gut and move around like they are well into their 30s.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Of course and sure nobody has even talked about hat he did get a nice assist for Elliott's goal. His numbers 17 Goals 7 Assists still look decent on paper even if only 7 have been in the league but his general play and his overall performances have been pretty dire. Currently he is not providing value for money considering his bumper wage.Originally posted by Jaco_Pastorious View PostGiven he turns 31 in a few month is is less baffling (though I genuinely thought Salah was one of those players who would motor into his mid 30s staying at a very high level. ) than the drop off some of the 20 somethings have shown.

Is he our worst problem? Not even close. Honestly, there are so many issues and under performing players peppered throughout the squad, that it's overwhelming to even talk about.

I do wonder with Salah would we see a bit more return from him if there were more genuine attacking threats up front with him to force defenders to look elsewhere.
Right now we rarely have Nunez there to cause chaos or Diaz with his direct running. We have Salah who can be double marked in every game because none of the other attacking options we have been trying have much by way of pace or the ability to stretch play in the manner Diaz or Nunez could.
Defences can stay compact and keep their shape pretty all the time against us because they are not being dragged out of position on one flank which then leaves a bit more room ion the centre or on the other flank for us to attack through.
That's not a knock against Gakpo or Elliot as one is still adjusting to a new country and club and the other is a kid in his formative years, just that we have zero other established threats available up front and certainly none with geuine pace and aggression.
Still would not fix our midfield issues, but we have had a fair share of chances over the past ten or so games that I suspect may have returned more goals had we a better and more settled front line in place for those games. If nothing else if we had Diaz and Nunez fit and firing, we would have the ability to hit on the counter with pace.
Salah is still contributing a bit (again at a reduced level to before) with the goals and assists he has gotten alright especially if you compare him with TAA who we see as a major attacking option. One assist in all comps this season afaik and a string of switching off his brain moments.
I'm just glad Klopp never went along with the frankly mad idea that pops up online of moving TAA to midfield. If he cannot track runners from the RB role with only one flank to protect, I would hate to see him in the centre where he would have twice as many runners to fail to track.
I do have a bit of a hair brained theory about Salah this season though and that is that he has done a Mane and told Klopp behind closed doors that he is leaving next summer and that the signing of the new contract was his way of making sure the club got a fee (along with having a massive pay rise along the way). PSG is where I am convinced he is going to go to be the "face" of the Qatari owned club and that he will go for somewhere between 50m and 70m. That money then becoming part of our summer spend.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

This makes a lot of sense and could explain the meeting with Qatari reps the other week... I've no doubt he'll get another bumper pay day at PSG, so the club should definitely cash in on him in the summer for the £70-80m touted.Originally posted by Jaco_Pastorious View PostI do have a bit of a hair brained theory about Salah this season though and that is that he has done a Mane and told Klopp behind closed doors that he is leaving next summer and that the signing of the new contract was his way of making sure the club got a fee (along with having a massive pay rise along the way). It'll also give our front line a chance to reform and regroup to understand how to play together better. Still doesn't fix the midfield, but the Salah money (and salary savings) would help offset any incomings...

He is not at the same levels and his confidence looks off, but it also seems that the formation is not offering him much freedom.Originally posted by danperkins View PostOf course and sure nobody has even talked about hat he did get a nice assist for Elliott's goal. He should have scored yesterday tho. Was a terrible shot. If we had all forwards fit he could do with a few games on the bench. But we dont so he has to start every game.Modifying post.

...I also think that's a big factor in his drop off this season. He's not been rested for even one or two games... he's in every week, and played in most cup games. He might want to play every game but in previous seasons, he's been rested/benched quite a few times to keep him fresh, eager and chomping at the bit to get back on the pitch and have an impact.Originally posted by Buzzo View PostHe is not at the same levels and his confidence looks off, but it also seems that the formation is not offering him much freedom.

It’s painful enough watching him struggle
