Haha, we call it foreign voice in our household. You just can't help yourself when you're talking to someone that's not British*

*And sometimes people with a very strong Scottish accent

So in your household, which I assume is in Britain, you would start to change your accent if talking to someone not from Britain*?

        *or Scottish

That's wild. There is a term for doing that. Cannot recall it's proper name so for now will call it doing a McClaren.

i came home from 5 years in copenhagen with a very strong danish accent, and i think it was just because on some subconscious level i felt it would be easier for them to understand. nobody there ever commented on it

You but what Norbs is saying is the people from that country start speaking in the accents of the foreigner.

So in your case it would have been like if all the Danish folk you met in Denmark started trying to speak in your accent whenever you were around.

yes i get it, but i think it's behavior that stems from the same desire to try and make things easier on the other person, even it's stupid or weird sometimes.

                code switching, I think.

I do it myself when I am out on the street.

No, it's different to that, not like Shteve McClaren. It's more subtle, like Stevie G was doing. Basically talking slightly slower to someone and making sentences slightly shorter. It's hard to explain but loads of people do it.

My MIL is Irish and she doesn't slow her speech down for anyone, just rambles on in her accent that's almost impossible to understand

My partner's Dad speaks to my MIL's family with an Irish accent. He says they don't understand him otherwise (he's got a Devonshire accent) but to anyone unaware of why he's doing it it sounds like a massive piss take

I tend to do it at times if the foreigner is struggling to understand me

It’s definitely a massive piss take

I honestly don't think it is meant to be though, but it is ****ing funny all the same. He's ex-army though and I think he does it to hide the fact he's British in an area of NI that is extremely anti-British. FWIW, he suggested I did the same when we were there and I just thought, nah **** that it's a pisstake

We've all done it and it was definitely well-meaning on Gerrard's part, but probably not necessary. It made it an awkward watch, I thought.
