Otherwise we are in a big year of transition next season no matter how well this one pans out
I'd imagine that's the kind of thing the club are offering, but Salah/Virgil are looking for more guaranteed/longer terms and that's why the negotiations are taking alot of time.

By what metric would you hold them to? What defines 'still performing'?

From a legal perspective, it's way too subjective.

        Maybe performance related?

Higher win bonus, with a more nominal wage?

I know he has taken stick in a few games for doing next to nothing (before scoring a goal). Not sure if this means he has done well. I guess it doesnt matter if the team is winning.

My worry is that he can drop off quickly during the season. Last few seasons he has been great up until Janaury. Im wondering though, is this the first summer for a while where he has had an actual break?

I still say we should move him centrally so he doesnt have to run as far to get into the box. Over a couple of yards in the centre of the box, there are few better. I just think we lack decent shots and we should be using Salah as the focal point of attacks.

The other thing is getting a replacement. It will prpobably cost a few quid, and depends on the availablity of someone suitable. I think 2 years with an option would be sensible.. but I dont think he is worth 300k now, let alone in 3 years. But then I wont care if we win leagues.

It heartening that he wants to stay though. He has been arguably the best striker in Europe over 7 years since he came here (give or take), and there has been very little drama when he could easily have angled for a move to one of the Madrids or Barcas. I know there isnt much room for sentiment, but that should mean something. Even if it is on 300k a week.

IMO the time for letting Salah go has gone. We won't get any kind of fee for him now - either he leaves for free or he signs a contract and is 'not the player he was' at the end of it. In those circumstances, it's time to bank a club hero. He should finish his career (or the best of it) here now ; but on his current wages that's an issue. I would reckon an extension with another extension built in but based on performance would be right - plus engineering his contract to a more performance based approach overall.
          Really?

Makes sense from our point of view but what's the attraction to him? He'll believe he's earned the right to have the contract he wants. If we don't give it, someone else certainly will.

Give him two years with a one year option (where we can activate if *we* want).

He's like a reverse Ronaldo - amazing athlete but more of a team player.

⁹Personally, as good as his numbers are if he left I'd be fine with it. We need to replace him soon anyway so happy to just get on with that and move on.

To me the only real club benefit to extending is to maybe sell and still get a decent fee in 12 months. But then he may want to stay and go into another final year...

So tbh I think I'm ready for him to go and we move on.

Pinch of salt - BBC Gossip

Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal want to sign Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah, 32, in time for next summer's Club World Cup.

Really? The real club benefit of him staying is that he can keep contributing to the team. Of course we'll have to replace him at some point but I'd rather we nurture someone while he's here, someone like Adeyemi.

Yeah absolutely. He's doing well but he isn't irreplaceable.

If he stays great. If not also great, I'm excited for the future.

Even if he’s not playing great you know he will contribute. Another goal. Another assist. He is always active and probing from minute 1 - 90. His fitness levels and durability levels are also ridiculous.

Give him two more years at his current wage, with an option for a third. Surely it’s a no brainier at this point.

It really is fairly straightforward, he looks after himself incredibly well and he’s had 20 goal involvements already this season. He’s irreplaceable given these numbers.

He might have changed as a player but you KNEW he’d take his chance.

                              Incredible.
