Unfortunately I don't think Gomez is anywhere near being a "great defender"

Not only does he lack concentration he's positionally off quite frequently

I also don't think he's strong enough and nor is he good enough in the air to be a centrehalf

I think he would benefit from a loan move to another PL club to get regular games and develop. This season has been fine because the injury to Clyne meant that him and TAA rotated the RB spot. In all honesty TAA is now ahead of him, and Clyne is now back so it's difficult to see where his games next year come from.

The problem with a loan move is that it depletes our squad if we do get injuries.

I only saw the first half yesterday.

You could see on a number of times Moreno being positionally miles out, pushing too far, not getting back etc. this meant one of the midfielders was getting drawn in. Our shape without Firmino, Robbo and TAA was really different, and made me realise how well organised we have become.

Moreno also try’s to force the game. Be it playing a % ball instead of the pass that is on, by making runs where he is guaranteed to be miles out of position and this again affects our shape. I’ve never known a player to try and go ‘all in’ on a tackle so often only to either miss the ball, or take only a bit of it turning it into a dangerous deflection, creating uncertaint. Our full backs are integral to our play, but need to be able to defend and hold position. Robbo has stood up well in big games against some great wingers. Moreno was giving Phillips way too much space and was not delivering the basics. When you see Robbo defending he watches the ball, choosing his moment to tackle and normally making it or at least holding up the attack by blocking play and jockeying for position. Moreno dives in time after time.

Time to move him on and bring in a replacement to challenge, and hopefully push Robbo further.

Phillips tormented him yesterday and at times it was like Liverpool of old, unable to deal with a big powerful runner.

That being said, LB still wouldn't be a priority for me. I'd be happy to stick with Robertson and Moreno for another year, then see where the likes of Lewis or the two new LB's we recently signed are, see if they can make the step up.

I appreciate Moreno hasn't played much recently but the things he was doing wrong was the same rash stupid **** he has been doing for years.

True, but he is nothing special, he's the sort of player that our fullbacks (players) shouldn't be having too many problems with, but it is this type of situation that we have struggled with too much over the years.

Not at all. He isn't very good, defensively or offensively, and he's not good enough for our first team. But he wasn't even out worstt full back yesterday yet he's singled out as 'stupid cunt' etc yet again. Almost like an unofficial 'who can hate Moreno the most' event is underway. It's a weird way to react to one of your own players not playing great in a drawn match.

Ref was disgraceful.
Moreno should never be close the the first team ever again. He was diabolical. Unfortunately Klavan was almost as bad as Moreno, and we had zero defense on the left.
Hopefully both are sold in the summer.

Gomez did have a shocker, but he is capable of more.

I felt sorry for Klavan having to play next to & cover for Moreno’s endless stuffups.

It's unfair to lump Gomez in with Moreno. Gomez is a great defender with fatal concentration flaws. Not something you can train out of a player unfortunately. Moreno on the other hand will give you the ****s for 150 minutes non-stop (90 minutes during the game + 60 minutes beforehand when the official team is announced).

I don’t think it it unfair tbh. They both had me sitting myself whenever the ball came near either of them. I know Gomez can do better & he needs to start to erradicate the errors quick smart if he’s to feature regular like.

but its not just about this drawn match, is it.
moreno has shown himself incapable of consistency at any level of decent football other than racing around like a headless chicken, chasing the ball like an over keen schoolboy and he has never been able to understand his positioning on the pitch and how it might leave gaps that team mates are then having to cover.
the lad is a liability, end of. maybe you have bought a shirt with his name on the back and you would hate him to leave because you would then need to get a danny ings shirt.

What did Klavan do that was so wrong?

As far as I can remember he wasn't at fault for any of the goals and statistically he was our best player. I thought he played quite well. Only incident I can remember was letting the ball run to Karius, if that can be classes as a mistake.

yeah I thought he did ok too. Must be hard with the train wreck playing outside you.
