And all this at a time where football as a collective has seen a massive fall in income and no real idea when things will return to anything approaching normal. Its easy to forget that the club employ several hundred people in various roles so the costs will be real and anything the club can do to mitigate these costs should be done.

This opinion may make me unpopular but I wonder if the same people who are the most adamant about the club paying everything from there own pockets would be happy if when things return to normal the club turn around and say we cannot afford to sign a player or similar as we do not have the funds available.
I'm on the fence with this. I can see both sides.

Since the government didn't means test any handouts (business or individual), its flat out open to abuse. I made the decision personally not to claim but many others will, and continue to work, that just doesn't sit well with me. I can totally see why the government didn't means test though as they wouldn't have had the manpower or be able to get payments out if they made it more complicated.

So for LFC, they've plenty of money in the bank and could probably choose to not receive help, but they are run by business men. They may well not see an income 'til well into next year yet they still have massive outgoings in wages so they chosen the risk adverse route, which you'd fully expect them to do when we've absolutely no idea how deep this could financially impact the club.

The players could have subbed the non-playing staff and some clubs have taken that route (like Barcelona), but players may prefer to help elsewhere e..g frontline staff, or equipment, etc like what hendo is perhaps doing. Its not for me to judge tbh.

Premier League warns PFA of £762m penalty if season is voided

The Premier League faces a £762m financial penalty if the season does not resume, players have been told.

Such a penalty would apply if broadcasters demanded refunds on games they could not show, the league said during a conference call on Saturday.

During the call with the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), the Premier League explained why it wants players to drop wages by 30%.

Clubs and players will now discuss the proposals.

That is because the Premier League is not mandated to make such a decision and it has to be agreed by the players.

As well as the PFA, which is the players' union, representatives from the League Managers' Association - the managers' union - were also involved in Saturday's call, which was concluded in less than an hour.

During the meeting, the league said the season will almost certainly be played behind closed doors if it resumes.

It also warned that, in addition to the penalties payable to broadcasters, hundreds of millions of pounds could be lost in sponsorship and matchday revenue because the season has been suspended.

The Premier League announced on Friday that it would ask players to take a 30% pay cut in order to protect jobs.

There are issues to be sorted out, though, as the PFA and leading agents think wage deferrals rather than cuts are preferable at this stage.
      Oh I don't know.

Leave it up to the players, but get clubs to commission special kits with a huge cock and balls picture on the back for those who refuse.

Players taking a pay cut so there is less tax going into the system and the club also taking money out of that system for furlough is a ****ing joke.

Its not free money either, we will all be paying higher taxes after this to enable everyone in need to survive. I'm quite happy to but not for ****ing billionaires.

I had hoped we'd be better than this as a club. We're usually on the money, someone has ballsed up

The numbers don't lie, the lost revenue would be more than the furlough scheme would cost but that's not really the point. The lost revenue could easily be recovered by an increase in the tax rate. 50p over £250k 55p over 500k 65p over £1m or whatever.

But you mustn't discourage the wealth creators or they'll stop creating wealth for themselves to hoard or something. I never quite got that argument

I am ashamed and embarrassed that our club even considered it never mind applied for it. The government should tell all premier league clubs to **** off.

Wizard of Oz/Emperor’s New Clothes moment for me. This set of money grabbing *******s are no better than any other owners. Just more competent.

Morally reprehensible decision, and I hope the backlash forces them to reconsider.

Just because the ownership can take advantage of this scheme doesn't mean they should
