All football the major leagues across Europe are going to be in the same position, I don't see why they can't extend contracts on the same terms until the whenever the season ends. The issue that keeps being mentioned is about those players being contracted to new clubs, even if they were to move they wouldn't be able to play until next season whenever that is so there would be no conflict of interest and if they extend the contracts to the end of the season and when transfers could be agreed such issues wouldn't arrive.

The main issue is for players in the lower leagues who might not finish their seasons and the gap between means they don't have a wage for a while

Plus those clubs who don’t want players anymore.

They will be resistant to keeping them on.
