Liverpool 4-2 Newcastle: 6.68 xG difference

    Barcelona 4-0 Deportivo La Coruna, 2017: 6.73

    Manchester City 8-0 Watford, 2019: 6.79

    VVV Venlo 0-13(!) Ajax, 2020: 8.04

Not only is it staggering when you consider the gulf in class between some teams, when on paper, us and Newcastle should be closely matched. But also because some people, including our own fans are making out we were lucky to get the win.

Not wasted my time reading match threads, but surely nobody that watched last night's game thought the scoreline did anything but flatter Newcastle?

That 4-2 could just as easily have been 8-2. Newcastle looked the cloggers they are under Howe.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Newcastle fans thinking they were hard done by by the ref and some Liverpool fans frustrated, thinking we didn't create much.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Main reason we scored "only" four goals was the Newcastle keeper having an excellent game.

We had 15 or 16 shots on target, and then we had something like 33 or 34 shots at goal over all.

We also had some quality individual performances in there.

Some in the first half, some on the second and some, like Gomez, that spanned both halves.

Was one of those games that no matter what Newcastle did, I never felt like we did not have another gear or two to go up to get ourselves back ahead or further ahead.

It could and probably should have been 7 or 8, it was frustrating not seeing us take the lead earlier than we did but we played very well last night and I'd say the score flattered Newcastle more than anything.

Aye, I was the same. Always felt like once we got one, more would follow. Only real surprise was conceding two goals completely against the run of play.

100% the 4-2 flattered them. It’s a familiar theme that opposition keepers have a worldie against us, as inevitable as death & taxes.
Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

                Dubravka ends the debate.

Considering it came just after busy Christmas period, which threw up random results for all teams, I think made the result and performance even more impressive.

When the fixtures were announced in summer, this looked like a massive game for us, a difficult one too. Nobody would ever have expected us to put up those attacking numbers back then.

I’m being a little flippant here but while it’s nice to create the sort of chances that are so clear cut, that they result in a tap in from 4 yards, I’d like us to return to being able to regularly convert chances which aren’t easy tap-ins that my cat would convert.

Dubravka has been terrible too, as my FF team can testify.

Personally, if I was the ref and not a Liverpool fan, I don’t think I’d have given it. The delay in him going down wasn’t great.

I believe he scored 7 points in FPL last night, despite conceding 4 goals. On the basis that he made 10 saves so the save points racked up. Crazy.

I don’t watch them so I’ll take your word on that.

His elbow takes out his standing foot (plus light contact with his gloves beforehand) and prevents a certain goal.
