Or a Plan A either.Originally posted by Cerbie View PostI hope you are wrong. He’s a poor man-manager, tactically inept this season and doesn’t seem to have a plan B.
The guy is a total turkey and so arrogant. Reminds me of Van Gaal at Man Utd.
At least they had the balls to bin him.
I think Hughes position is also untenable. I'd like him, Slot, Slah, Gakpo, Jones and Konate gone this summer.

We have not put in a good team performance for a whole game since we beat real Madrid earlier on.
Every single game has been patchy in performance , even when we have won by a margin...
Its been 9 months where we have been off the pace
To say that is worrying is an understatement...
With our inconsistency i doubt we will even get fifth place.
We wont get past City in the cup and I no doubt we will get past Galatasary. This season promised so much and so far has been so ****...
Bring in Alonso now, give him time with the players before pre-season. There is absolutely no sign of us hitting any kind of form or progress at the momentJacques Brel is alive and well and playing at Anfield

Why?
On his watch we brought in Kerkez, Wirtz, Ekitikie, Isak, Leoni, Mamar, Chiesa and Frimpong. Ignoring youth players and the like of cover for cover type players.
Most of those players have turned out to be good or at least shown enough to suggest they have futures at the club.
Leoni and Isak were unlucky with injuries so jury is out on them. Mamar was brought in to be a number two for a couple years and he has been fine too. Chiesa looks fine when he plays but rarely plays.
So in terms of the players that came in, I think it would be fair to say we have a good hit rate.
Now the question of should we have brought in more players....I think we should have brought in at least a CB in January, an attacker would have been nice too, but maybe we did try and were priced out on wages or players saw we were not doing well and did not fancy the move. Now if we go a summer window without filling a lot of the gaps in the squad then that is another story, but last summer was a good one for transfers so if Hughes &co can repeat that this summer then fine.
Then we have contracts. Konate has apparantrly knocked back a number of contract offers so maybe the pay hikes are not big enough or maybe the player has already decided he wants a free transfer and big signing on fee elsewhere.
Gravenberch has signed a new contract and Szobo has publically said that talks are ongoing with him.
VVD and Salah signed new contracts under Hughes but the way both were playing at the time makes it hard to be overly critical and the TAA situation was more down to TAA wanting his Real Madrid move and do not think there was any way to keep him.
Head coach-wise, Hughes may have been part of bringing in Slot. One one hand we can say he brought in the guy that has overseen this poor season but on the other hand he helped bring in the guy that lead us to a league title, so think that balances out for Hughes.
Think overall Hughes has gotten more right than wrong but needs a good summer of 2026 to show that getting it right more often than not is what happens with him as part of the suits.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

In terms of hughes, he's been unlucky with injuries but am not sure any if the signings have hit ground running. Ekiteke aside. Maybe not his fault admittedly. Easy to say in hindsight but that Isak outlay is very questionable. Arguably Wirtz too.. Unless you're going to build team around him, he's more of a luxury at present.Substance > Style

That is assuming Alonso is the number one target if we want to make a change. Maybe we do want a change but the guy we want has made it clear he will not move before the summer.
Maybe we want Enrique or Flick (highly unlikey we would get either but afaik both enter the final 12 months of their contracts come June)
Maybe we want Inzaghi (last 12 months of contract come June), Emery or even Kompany.
Maybe we want Nagelsmann and his skateboards
Hell maybe Klopp has had talks behind the scenes to return for maybe a season or two but will not do so until the summer.
Just think getting rid of Slot now would be doing so for the sake of it unless we have either our number one or number two target ready to start straight away. Don't want an interim in for only the rest of the season as anyone good enough to improve us that quickly is going to be in a job and not likely to want a gig that is only a few months long.
I do also have a suspicion, based on nothing more than a gut feeling, that if Alonso is the number one choice and if he does want to come, that he would prefer to let this season play out without him and let Slot own this season whether it ends with a whimper or a bang. Then come in himself with a clean slate in June. Might be that any target we have could be thinking the same way.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Lots of players have not hit the ground running or sat on the bench for months before being ready.
Robertson, Firmino, Fabinho etc all fit that bill. Getting players that hit the ground running would be great but getting in guys that turn out to be the right guys in time is more important and I think the majority of those that have come in since Hughes came back are showing signs that they might be guys for the long haul.
Isak I was not for signing, especially once we have gotten Ekitike in, but at the same time we did buy a guy that look the second best striker in the league and that had a lot more to his game than just being a poacher. The injuries have meant we will have to see if Isak can prove himself with us next season. Same goes for Leoni.
Think most of the players we brought in last summer had most of us saying we were bringing in the right sort of quality and for positions we needed them for. Yes we could have down with a senior CB in the same window but we tried and it fell apart thanks to a literal last minute tantrum from Glasnar.
With the advantage of hindsight we should have brought in a pacey attacker that could play out wide but the fall off in quality from Salah could not have been predicted, not to the level it has been anyway imo. Gakpo becoming even more one dimensional was not something I think many saw, think most expected more of the same as last season from him and that with Isak, Ekitike and Wirtz onboard that Gakpo would be cover for a few positions.
Also think the drop off in performance from the likes of MacAllister and Konate (though much improved apart from last night) was also very unexpected.
Just think on the things that Hughes has some or a lot of control over, that he has done pretty well. Not outstanding but enough to earn a B minus or a C plus at worst. Good but Dickie has a lot of potential to do better type school report
The on pitch stuff is not on him imo, but I suspect it will colour a lot of the views we have of him, Edwards etc.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Hughes signings have been a mixed bag and although there has been improvement in several, remains to be seen if the window will be considered a successful one. Currently it clearly isn't as we are nearly 20 points behind Arsenal and have only put in a handful of decent performances all season and there is a glaring lack of pace and physicality in the side...... and that's after spending 400m quid. Certainly some bad luck there too and Arne hasn't done us many favours this season either. So in short, it has been a bit of a **** show.Last edited by danperkins; 11-03-26, 11:49 AM.

I kind of agree with what you are saying but if I was an incoming manager I would like to get to know my players before decisions are taken about new squad signings. Maybe the new guy has a completely different point of view to Slot.Originally posted by Doc_Piptorious View PostThat is assuming Alonso is the number one target if we want to make a change. I say alonso but personally I would prefer Luis Enrique , as I understand he is not thrilled at PSG. Definitely do not go for an interim manager!! that would never work out for anyone.Jacques Brel is alive and well and playing at Anfield

I think at the signings that we have made have been good, as I said in the summer the problem with the squad isn't so much the players we have signed but the players we haven't. The squad isn't big enough and there are areas that needed strengthening that weren't.
I think Wirtz and Ekitike have been good signings and will get better, Kerkez has also improved massively as the season has gone on. I still think Isak was a good signing (and will be as long as the injury doesn't impact him), Frimpong has had injury issues so hasn't had a chance to show what he can do, same with Leoni. The questions about Hughes for me are about why we didn't bring players in in positions we needed or whether we moved people on too soon or if we tried to do too much in one window. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
