    Thoughts for 25/26 season

We're out of the CL to a frankly faster and stronger PSG side but we're likely going to win the league which is brilliant for Slot's first season!

Based on my potentially knee jerk reaction to today's loss, here are my thoughts for 25/26 and Slot's first transfer window.

    NEW FORMATION NEXT SEASON?

Will we see a continuation of the 4-2-3-1 we saw against PSG? I thought it worked well but we needed more power *and* control up top which neither Jota or Nunez could provide.

    PLAYERS TO STAY

Elliott needs clarity on what his role is going forward.

Chiesa should be fully match fit and ready to start games. I think this was a rehabilitation season and he'll be great for us.

Szoboszlai has run himself into the ground for us - I thought he was largely good against PSG but if we can focus him further forward we should see better numbers from him.

Mac Allister should also be further forward, he's very creative and calm, also great at those silent runs that lead to a goal.

Robertson can stay, he was excellent against PSG at Anfield, he just doesn't have the legs for a full season of football. Kerkez would be an excellent replacement for Tsimikas and then we'd have left back sorted.

    PLAYERS TO LEAVE

Nunez - his race is run. He has power and pace but zero composure. He could have been great for us but he just doesn't have the skill set or the mentality to make it for us.

Jota - Injury prone and lacks pace. A cracking little player at times but I think players like Jayden Danns need to step up.

Diaz - Too hot and cold for me. Lacks the power and pace of Mané to burst into the box. I miss Mané.

Tsimikas - He's been a decent player but we need a better one to rotate with Robertson.

Kelleher - Stay or go? Mamardashvili isn't having a great time in goal right now, perhaps just an off season for him.

TAA - Looks likely to be ****ing off to Real Madrid.

    WHAT DO WE NEED?

    I'm assuming a 4-2-3-1 formation -

Recruit a quality target player like Isak, Gomes or Gyökeres. Danns as backup.

Move Szoboszlai and Mac Allister in the three behind the main striker. Chiesa, Jones, Elliott, Gakpo, Doak and Nyoni would also do well in this formation.

A more powerful and mobile midfielder to play alongside Gravenberch in the defensive two - someone like Baleba at Brighton?

Sign a quality left back - Kerkez would be perfect.

Sign a quality right back - Kimmich would have been great but he's re-signed for Bayern. Bradley is good but I think a bit young to rely on for every game.

I'm sure I've missed stuff but what do you think?

Chiesa is gone in the summer. Absolute waste of time singing him.

We need pace on the flanks. Therefore we aren't signing a 30 year old right back. However (assuming TAA goes) we do need a right back as Bradley cannot be trusted in the position for an entire season due to form and injuries.

A winger and striker should be priority.

Defensive midfielder next. Our old friend Andre at Wolves has been low key very good for them this season

VVD and Mo contracts. Wouldn't want to be the man who does / doesn't green light these deals. I fear they'll either be canny business or unmitigated disasters in the final year(s)

This summer is huge and will shape the next 3/4 seasons for the club and define the Slot era Liverpool.

Slot perhaps learns to trust the squad more when it's his players.

Real question marks over Elliott, Jones and Endo

I just realised that I didn't address VVD - but I think he'll re-sign along with Doak, Robertson, Elliott, Jones, Bradley, Gomez and Konate.

I think whether Salah stays or not we need to overhaul the forward line either in terms of how we play and the players. The players who have been playing through the middle (Jota, Nunez and Diaz when he plays there have generally been poor, you can make the argument that they need service and haven't been getting it but they are also drifting out wide or deep rather than being in the box when chances come. It feels like the wider players are more the focus of the attack which is fine but the CF needs to be a Firmino type player. I could see at least 2 from Nunez, Jota and Diaz leaving in the summer, and that is before we consider Mo's contract. We haven't really evaluated Chiesa's suitability so he is stillnvery much an unknown who we probably can't rely on.

Elsewhere we need another DM, a LB a RB (if TAA leaves). Plus replacements for any squad players who leave, probably question marks over Gomez, Elliott, Endo given their game time.

I think Slot needs to use the squad more, perhaps that will come when he has hid own players but to me it feels like some players are lacking match sharpness when they come in due to a lack of fame time

We obviously can't release and sell everyone but I think that at least these will go, Chiesa, Salah, Trent, Tsimkas, Darwin, Diaz, Kelleher, Doak, Bajcetic, Morton, maybe Jota too.

I reckon we'll be looking a major rebuild over at least two seasons.
            * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

If we can get the league wrapped up fairly quickly it would be interesting to see who gets minutes and/or what Slot might try to do if/when he has a free hit.

Clearly it needs to be a big summer but how big is still a question

Yes, I think this will be a ruthless summer, I think he'll be sold if a a decent bid comes in. I actually can see VVD leaving too unless he signs on Edward's terms. If we are going to start a new cycle we need players of a certain age and wage profile. Konate, Mac, Dom and Grav will be integral to a new team, but I can see massive changes coming up.

Fair enough - shame if Doak is sold to fund out transfer activity but that's the reality I guess

VVD is still a top centreback, but yesterdays performance might turn his head. I think we need show show our ambition.

You an only go so far signing injury prone players who had good stats a few years ago. I wonder if we can really afford top players though.

It may be PSG are a top 2 or 3 side, but they didnt have a great qualifiers.

Our league position is clouded by the fact the rest of our league is utterly ****e. Too many teams are spending vast amounts on crap. The vast amounts of money are producing inflation in the league that is affecting the quality, imho. Teams like City (and PSG) can afford these prices, but everyone else is having to pay inflated prices. To get a couple of quality fullbacks you could proabably do so for 7.5-10m each a few years ago. It feels like we are going to have to break the bank just to fix a less important part of the team.

Not going to comment on your selections above, but I think this will be a busy close season. I can see at least 5 current first teamers being replaced. Could be more. Spend will be challenging for those who think FSG are taking money out of the club.
                        Really?

What kind of spend are you talking about? We can't spend a lot more than about £60m net.

There is some recent criticism that FSG are hiding some money in the wage bill, given it's inflation in recent accounts and how many suits they have.

Well, I don't know the figures, but we already made a loss over the last financial year, so we have to be conscious of PSR.
