But this is all relative to the extremely high bar he sets, not off his transfer fee but off of what he regularly did for Leverkusen.

It’s not like we are talking about an incredibly weak, slow player or one with a terrible touch or decision making generally

Though I think a big part of it right now is down to him being a bit too quick for the rest of the team rather than him being that fraction of a second too slow.

You can see him making the runs or looking to play a pass almost instantly and then having to check what he was about to do until someone else is in position.

Pretty sure it is only a matter of time before his teammates get on the same wavelength as him and get comfortable knowing that they have a guy in the team that can read their runs and find them with a pass without him having to take time to scan the pitch for too long.

Same thing with the runs he makes. He sees the spaces and where the ball needs to go so quickly that it will take time for some of the others to get in synch with how quickly Wirtz does that. Think MacAllister coming back into the team will help a lot as MacAllister can be very quick to spot movement ahead of him. Also think Gakpo and Ekitike will be two that will link with Wirtz very well. Especially the former if the way he links with Simons in the Dutch national team is anything to go by.

All the bedwetters on twitter etc - thinking he's a massive flop after 2 games because he hasn't got a goal or assist are laughable really.

Im more worried about Konate and Mo playing like ass than Kerkez and Wirtz not setting the league alight after 2 games.
Ha, in FF world he's went from biggest oversight in FF history, seriously underpriced, to get rid, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is your man.

Suits me though, as I anticipated this and will get in back in on the cheap.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

That's actually a really fair point and great comeback to moaners. He's not too slow or off the pace, he's just too quick and everyone else is off. Love it.

Do think it is not that unusual a thing though when a truly world class player joins a new team, especially creative ones.

There tends to be a period where the player and team are learning to adjust to each other. The player may still be trying to play/create at the pace he was used to doing with past teammates and his new teammates are still playing into and around that position with the tempo they were used to doing orior to the new player arriving.

When we first got Thiago you could see something similar with how quickly he was releasing balls into space and how the other players were often reacting to that pass rather than already running to where it was about to be played.

Alonso is another that springs to mind.

I reckon once Witrz has gotten three to five competitive games under his belt, that things like the timing of runs and passes will click on a far more regular basis.

Not to piss on the theory but I think Harv made a similar point about the goal not moving itself into a better position when Nunez first joined.

The Athletic did a good video on Wirtz’s struggles. I don’t know how to embed it but the link is below:

His energy levels are off the charts, very similar to Dom in this regard. You can see it’s going to happen & hopefully a few more games & he’s banging them in. Looking promising IMO.

That wee exchange between him and Mac, when Mac fizzed it into him in the box, he controlled, turned and got the shot away (leading to offside goal) was very encouraging.

Yeah there’s plenty of encouraging signs like his great vision, great weight of pass etc so I’m all in on him blowing the league apart sooner rather than later.

That first touch was madness... so good.

Just scored a stunning free kick for Germany.

Plenty of options for free kicks this season.
