Virgil rejected City and Chelsea.

Both of them absolute were as much top of the pile signings for record fees and we beat the biggest clubs to get them.

They both felt like seismic, game changing signings at the time and so they proved to be.

The clubs may not be exactly the same ones, but we beat several of the biggest competitors in Europe either way for each of these signings.

And Torres was no more proven at the highest level than Virgil or Alisson at the time of signing, so doesn’t make sense to apply that caveat to them, but not him.

I remember a while back reading something from him (Laudrup) in which he basically said that he chose Juventus because they offered him double the money that we offered. A quick google on your theory came up with this:

"We agreed a three-year contract and went away thinking it was all done," he said. "But two weeks later they came back saying they wanted to offer me the same package, but for four years because I was still young and needed time to develop."

Apparently he was due to sign for 3yrs then we tried to switch it to 4yrs at the last minute.
