It requires the fifth placed team to win the CL and the sixth placed team then winning the Europa for 7 teams to end up in next season's CL.

Arsenal qualifying in a CL and winning the CL just means the 5th placed team still gets a slot but no extra slot is created.

We have the 5th slot anyway because of the UEFA rankings. Confirmed when Arsenal beat Sporting.

I know that, I was replying with what would be needed to get seven English teams into the CL next season.

The only way it can realistically happen is if we win the CL and get a CL spot in the league at the same time and Villa win the Europa and they come sixth.

I originally read it as us having to be fifth and also win the CL.

This is what is on the Premier league and Sky sites about it.

There is a specific but very possible outcome by which England could have seven teams in next season's tournament - almost a fifth of the overall contingent in the league phase.

It would require Liverpool to win the Champions League this season while also finishing in the top five in the Premier League. Because of their qualification as holders the free spot given to their league position would pass down to the team in sixth, in theory.

If Aston Villa occupy that sixth position and win the Europa League - which they are favourites to do, according to Opta - they too would automatically qualify for the Champions League. Leaving the team in seventh, currently Brentford, to sweep up and reach Europe's premier competition as one of a record-breaking seven representatives.

Should the Premier League earn those seven Champions League spots, that still leaves two Europa League qualifying places and a single Conference League space up for grabs, dropping all the way down to 10th in the table.

I am assuming, going by how that is phrased, that if we are top five and win the CL and Villa are in seventh but win the Europa that sixth place still gets in as well as Villa getting in, but cannot find that outcome being comfirmed as valid anywhere.

The way that bit about us reads makes it sound as though it would also apply to Arsenal. As long as we make it I don’t really care but curious how Barcelona or Real Madrid would cope with Brentford.

I think if you win the league title and the Champion's league in the same season then the extra slot does not carry. Arsenal would need to not win the league, finish top five and win the CL for it to carry to the sixth place team.

            Afaik that is.

Agree about it being interesting how some of Europe's elite would handle a Brentford or a Brighton (though playing two games a week would kill those teams imo unless they managed to hit upon a stellar season the same one that they were in the CL for).

Even funnier is if you look at the PL table and realise that Everton are at present just behind seventh on goal difference.

Real Madrid flying into Liverpool and then looking all confused when the ground they go to is the Benny Hill stadium.

Might sound daft, but I do think we have missed Endo this season, comes on in the last 15 minutes and shores up the backline, no coincidence we have been losing goals in the last few minutes of games.

He wasn't being played, another one Slot completely doesn't trust. Rather unfairly i might add.

So, next season will see a much changed line-up probably:

                  Heading out: Robertson, Salah

Could be leaving: Alisson, Konate, Mac Allister, Jones, Endo, Chiesa, Gomez

Players who are probably here next season:

                  GK:
                  Mamardashvili

                  Defense:
                  Frimpong
                  Virgil
                  Kerkez
Leoni - Coming back from serious injury
Jaqcuet- Coming back from serious injury
Bradley- Coming back from serious injury

                  Midfield:
                  Szoboszlai
                  Gravenberch
                  Nyoni

                  Forwards:
                  Wirtz
                  Isak
                  Ekitike - Seriously injured
                  Rio
                  Gakpo

                  Jesus.

                    Depends who’s in charge.

Jones won’t leave if Slot is gone. Konate looks like he’s about to sign a new deal. And I don’t think Ali goes yet. The club don’t mind letting players leave on a free in that situation so keep him for one more year. Kostas will be back, he was happy to be a squad player and did a job when needed.

The others will likely go. But a new manager also means some of the younger players might get more opportunities which will be good. Morrison is another young player like Rio, fast wide player who can score and create, and should be getting some minutes. Nyoni definitely needs more game time and has always looked capable when given a chance that’s more than a few minutes. I’m sure there are a few others more than capable of doing a job as squad players at times.

Could Elliot come back and offer something as a squad player again.

One thing is for sure the next manager needs to be able to trust and use the full squad and young players when needed. It’s ridiculous to have a squad and not use a bunch of players who have shown they are good enough to do a job when needed.

The latest noises say that Konate is staying, but even with him included, when you lay it out like that, we have a lot of work to do (to put it mildly)

Ali is defo off, no way Mama will play second fiddle for another year - I reckon a handshake was done with Ali hence we extend until 2027 and we get a fee, rumoured to be Saudi

Yeah, think Slot might have him in mind when talking about the need to sell. Truth is, we don't that many sellable assets, Ali and MacAllister really. Maybe Dominik if he wants to leave, he'll need to sign a contract or be sold. Endo and Chiesa will fetch very little, same with Jones.

All these necessary changes and they are necessary changes is exactly why I thought we would go full tilt for a winger and CB in Jan, as they would not only benefit us in the present but also two less players to bed in when we have to make 500 changes in the summer window. We should also be careful other players don't want to leave if we don't get Champs League football.
