Liverpool transfer news: Lucas Leiva move to Besiktas in doubt

Brazilian midfielder had expected to leave Anfield for Turkey but was surprised to find himself in the starting XI at Arsenal

Liverpool fans – and Lucas Leiva himself – were not the only ones surprised to see the Brazilian midfielder included in the starting line-up for Monday’s night’s Premier League match away to Arsenal.

Besiktas were also shocked with the officials in London to seal Lucas’ move and return to the Turkish club with him today. Lucas was due to be on a flight to Istanbul this morning with his transfer – expected to be on a initial loan with an option to sign permanently – now in doubt.

Besiktas are still hopeful it will go through. They believed they had reached an agreement with Liverpool and Lucas at the end of last week. Having not featured in the first two matches for his club this season Lucas did not expect to be involved – never mind start – at the Emirates.

Besiktas were made aware in advance that Lucas had been selected to face Arsenal and remain hopeful that a deal will go through although there was further confusion after Brendan Rodgers post-match comments when he said the 28-year-old would continue at Liverpool and not be sold.

Lucas played 76 minutes against Arsenal in an impressive performance and appeared to wave his goodbyes to the travelling supporters when he was substituted.

But when asked whether Lucas would be a Liverpool player when the window closes Rodgers said: “yes”. He added: “Lucas is our best defensive midfield player we have.

There are games in which I will pay three midfield players and not always want a specific defensive one.

“But when we do need that, he's the best that we have. He came in at Arsenal and did a great job, and is very much part of what we want to do.

“Of course, every player wants to play every minute of every game and you can never guarantee that as a manager.

“But he is certainly very important to what we want to do, and is highly respected by myself, the coaching staff and the players.”

Sometimes I wonder how football clubs are run but there seems to have been a lack of communication between manager, player, agent and the clubs admin in this instance.

I find it hard to believe Rodgers would let Lucas go.

He should stay, going by Godgers comments in the last 24 hours he'll play most of the big aways which is basically all of our aways till December, plus theres 6 Europa games he'll start (if he's not playing all the lesser league games) and League Cup so he wont be that short of appearances. Rodgers doesnt like to mess around too much when the team is playing well either so he might even stay in for the lesser games. Certainly shouldnt be loaning him out anyway, if he wants to go his agent can go and convince someone to ****ing pay for him!

Get the feeling he is definitely going and it's just a matter of time before the deal gets completed

If this is the case (That we have accepted a deal for him and he was due to fly out today) I don't understand why Rodgers said he will be here when the window closes.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Probably hoping to squeeze something more from the deal

Maybe he meant his car window which he started to close at the end of the interview

Sounds to me like he was being allowed to leave as has been told he isn't a 1st XI player. IMO, Can behind Milner and Henderson is what Rodgers sees as his preferred central midfield, so if Lucas wants more games, he's allowed to leave in order to get them

But that was before Allen and then Henderson got injured. Sounds like Allen is potentially happier to not be first choice, but with him AND Henderson out, Lucas can't be allowed to leave

It might just have changed Rodger's opinion as to how valuable Lucas is also
I saw a dead fish on the pavement and thought "what did you expect?"

I am being told he is staying now. Don't know how true this is but I hope it is.

                      He was fantastic last night.
