Milner: I was banned from wearing red growing up

Liverpool star James Milner has admitted that his dad enforced a ban on wearing red in his house growing up.

Milner grew up in a Leeds-supporting household, and as a result he was brought up not to like rivals Manchester United.

However, the former Man City man has admitted that his father was not displeased to see him in a red Liverpool shirt upon joining in 2015.

“It’s true, yes,” Milner admitted to FourFourTwo when asked about the influence of his dad.

“Obviously Leeds fans are brought up to dislike Manchester United, as rivals, so red wasn’t allowed.

“I didn’t have any red shirts or anything, and the first time I ever wore it was probably for England.

“He did joke when I signed for Liverpool that it was the first time he’d be happy to see me regularly in red.”

There can be a case made for him being our best player on current form.

I thought last season he put in the best performance overall from a midfielder I've ever seen in the CL for us. He's built for that competition. Last night he was great again, every team should want a player like him.

Milner is surprising everyone at this stage, but I'd argue it's more than that, he's playing the best football of his career in total.

There’s real value in having a Carabao Cup run up until Christmas to keep the fringe/back up players active. It’s a shame we’ve drawn Chelsea first up- Sarri will be going for it in his first season with no Champs League.

We have enough quality in our squad to rest key players and see off a second string Chelsea side at the same time.

I hope he gets a rest in the Carabao cup against Chelski...Fabinho, Shaq, Studge, Origi, Clyne, Moreno, Mig and some of the kids (Curtis, Dom) - play them and rest the first team.

I genuinely thought after he decided he wouldnt play left back (after a great season there), and wanted to force his way into the reckoning as a midfielder that the decision would be the end of him.

Couldnt have been more wrong. He has made himself undroppable. His winning back the ball against Mbappe was almost as crucial to the goal as Bobbys sweet strike.
