    Not sure why el mat is getting so much stick. Sport has often been cited as one of the best ways for young men to get out of deprived areas.

    Sure, just because you're middle class doesn't mean you're not going to make it - but there's probably more opportunities and therefore more distraction.

      Agree There's more distraction (opportunities) for middle class kids and so generally not the same desire or will to succeed with football... Suarez, Gerrard and Carra are 3 great examples of how modest upbringings can create world class players...

      Like most, I like the philosophy of retaining 'a scouse heart' but not at the risk of losing more ground to the top 4...

        Its because of the absolute nature of his statement. if he had put in a qualifier, then maybe it wouldn't have been so much stick. But saying..

        footballers come from council estates not from middle class backgrounds.
        Is just wrong. So people provided examples to prove so. If he had said The Majority or most. I dont think there would have been such a problem.

        Plus it was fun searching for posh footballers.

          El Matador didn't have a good end to last year and it seems he isn't having the best of starts to 2013.

            I think the huge rewards that can come from being a professional footballer are already making it a more attractive proposition irrespective of class. Business, commercial law, a few branches of the arts and, now, some sports - what else is as highly paid?

            Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

                  He isn't half raising himself on a very high pedestal. I don't doubt his abilities but hubris is also a trait that's needed from time to time.

                  The "rinsing" comment made me cringe, not becuase its not true or the players concerned will now not perform. But mainly because he's provided the stick for naysayers (on this and other forums) to start beating him up with.

                    there is some research conducted on this by a scottish university. I will try and dig it up but football has always been a working class game.

                    If you look at some of the top players in the world, most of them will have very tough backgrounds. for example ibrahimovics - i am zlatan, it states that he lived in a very poor area and that it was like a ghetto.

                    They dont go to school but spend their days kicking a ball around the place, improving their touches on streets, against walls. Might sound like a cliche but if you look at the likes of fowler, gerrard, rooney - all top players from liverpool - all lads from underprivileged backgrounds.

                    There are more middle classes playing football today and kids generally have so many distractions. the chances of a kid making into the leagues is something like 10,000 to one so what drives those kids to beat the odds.

                    its hard to create desire and hunger in a kid that has everything. there are some middle class kids who make it as pros - like lampard, redknapp, michael owen but the vast majority of players come from tough backgrounds.
