I don't think that will be the problem sadly, getting the wages sanctioned will be. That being said if there is a chance of getting him back we should certainly be trying

      ------Alonso Lucas
      Suarez Gerrard Coutinho
      --------Sturridge

With Eriksen gradually being introduced for Gerrard.

The times they are a changin'.

Is he a free agent this summer or next?

And as rcasemore said, there are wages to factor in. I reckon it could be something FSG would be willing to sanction as Alonso is an icon for us, a leader (fit Rodgers' criteria), and a winner. It would make more sense than Sneijder, and they were willing to put a package for him then.

Makes too much sense this signing so expect it not to happen.

It does and it doesn't, if it works the huge outlay on a 31 year old would be seen as a master stroke of not it's a massive outlay on a short term solution.

I want him back but the numbers for FSG would need to make sense, not sure they do

This type of signing is about more than just numbers IMO. Sometimes you have to be brave and go with your gut feeling and I have a strong gut feeling that if he came back it would be massive catalyst that this young developing team needs. His influence would be nothing but positive, on and off the pitch.

But would Xabi be a short term solution ? Yes he's 31 but he is still seemingly in his prime, players who rely on pace and reflexes tend to decline around the age of 30, Xabi on the other hand who's game is centred around intelligence and vision could well carry on at a high level for at least another 4/5 years.

It probably would be but you could look at say Erikson as a long term solution for cheaper wages.

It all depends on how FSG would view the signing tbh.

It also depends if Erikson would come to a club outside of the CL. With Alonso, he knows what he's getting here, the CL might not be such an important factor. Especially if Real (hopefully) win it this season

That's also very true, I do think the finances with Xabi would be the biggest stumbling block but hopefully FSG would see the obvious benefits of bringing him in.

I doubt this is ever going to happen as a transfer though

I think he will end up re-signing with them.
