I'm amazed his wife and kids aren't out there with him? As Rich pointed out it was always the plan to have them with him, and they were to begin with. Have they bailed and come home?

Yeah I'm pretty surprised at that, I thought she in particular would love all that! Guess it's easy to look from afar and see sun and beaches, but get there and you dont know anyone and are stuck in traffic for 15 hours a day for a 2 mile journey!!

People fall into two categories those who love the expat lifestyle and those who are ultimately counting down the days to when they can go home. Expats would rather live in any other country than were they were born and people who are living abroad are shipping HP sauce half way around the world just to feel normal ...

Living abroad is obviously not for her ... LA with money is bliss

As I said my daughter is in the same school as his kids

His eldest daughter was telling kids back in March or April that she didnt want to go and certainly as of the end of the last school year it was pretty common knowledge that the kids would be coming back to the school

I think he changed his mind when faced with the kids reaction. I think when he looked at it he would be uprooting them for 18 months or so and he thought it wasnt worth the disruption.

Shes a real homebird from what I've heard and she was one of the major reasons he never went to Chelsea

Christ. He might as well retire and come home.

I've got a mate who lives in LA

I think your categories are a little too black and white though

He hates the UK wants to live anywhere but here but he certainly doesnt enjoy LA life, he hates the traffic, the cost of living in the place etc..

I think he will move soon either another state or to Australia (hes lived there before). The problem that I see is that what my mate wants no longer exists in the places he wants to go

He wants the cheap American easy life of the 70's & 80's or the cheap Australian lifestyle of the 90's, where you got paid reasonable money and the cost of living was low and you are only a few minutes walk from the coast etc..

Those places are now generally expensive to live and unless you choose to live in the less desirable places out in the sticks you are not going to find that standard of living

If he's not happy or enjoying it, he may as well retire. I reckon in the back of his mind, there's still the urge to keep playing, because otherwise, he'll never play again. He needs that routine that being a professional football player gives.

He went out in June and the season has pretty much ended now hasnt it

His kids probably went out in early July and came back early September

I would imagine the kids went out for half term (as the school has a fortnight off in the October half term)

So hes hardly been away from them long

The season starts up again in February???

The kids will probably go out at Easter which is 3 weeks I think

A lot different to the UK. We all like to think we work hard, but a lot of the guys out here graft, and I mean graft. I'm fortunate that I work for a company that does take care of you, but, in return they expect a lot from me. There is a work life balance, holidays and weekends are sacred and no pressure is applied to work on these whatsoever (phone/email). The tech companies are different, unless you are way high up and they do expect blood.
I make no apologies, this is me

LA Traffic is dreadful, I've lost count of the times I've turned around at 7pm at night and checked into a hotel near work. Its expensive depending on where you want to live, certainly cheaper parts of LA (decent) are a drive away. That said, the trade off is fantastic - beach, weather, outdoor life is second to none that I've seen

Mexico misses this Frenchie, even if you speak fluent Spanish well paid jobs are not widely available.

You need to be able to get a job from a foreign company on a foreign salary or be able to start your own business.

Of course if you have some money and are coming to retire you can have a great life here for not too much money and if you are happy to stay in Mexico and not travel home to see family and friends you can be very happy with a much lower salary than you would need in many fully developed countries.
