Not doubting that sakho is decent but those stats just show that we dont have a decent alternative.

He's flourished in a back three and I agree he's our best defender, but it's not as if the competition is that stiff

i like Sakho and think that back 3 of Can-Skrtel-Sakho is excellent but yeah we might aswell have had a scarecrow in there if Sakho doesn't play.

Plus....don't forget the reemergence of Lucas in the side along with the switch to the three CBs. Stats can be misleading at times, but I think given what we've seen over the last couple months, I think nearly all fans have no issue with the Can, Skrtel and Sakho being our numero uno choice for the foreseeable future.

Maybe one can move out for a while, but wholesale change can be an issue - having said that, I think the lads the other night done relatively OK all things considered.

my only issue is that although can is mostly decent [or better] in defence i think he gives the team more thrust and power when he plays in the middle.
if only we could play someone else at the back without it being a compromise.
but then we end up beefless in the midfield.

            we need

            can - skrtel - sakho
            ----- lucas --------
            --- can - hendo ---

While I see Can's future in midfield, I don't really have an issue with him continuing in the role he has been doing. Has had a few shaky moments, and obviously wasn't great the other night in midfield, but I'm not concerned at all with his development as its still very much a learning process for him.
If we brought in a top quality third CB, then yes, maybe we could see a more regular role in midfield......but that remains to be seen if it's a priority in the summer, as Brendan may not be finished with Project Lovren. Toure will probably be off so we'll have to do something with defence or midfield personnel-wise......and then there's the threat of Lucas' exit.

                very much so.

Hopefully Sakho can get back to fitness and that back 3 can continue their progress.

Excellent stuff, bit of match fitness for him & hopefully straight back into the side next week.

He played the 1st half according to Ventons match report.

I know some people on here think I'm too defensive of Big Mama but **** it, I'm gonna have my say. I'm pissed up so forgive me.

Firstly it took about 3 minutes for both commentators to talk about his discomfort in possession. That incident was symptomatic of what had already become obvious in those first three minutes - their shape was shutting off all the space and there was literally no-one for Sakho to pass to. No options but to lump it. Now clearly we are under instruction not to lump it, and it is to Sakho's credit that he's brave enough to hang on to it and look for the pass to feet when under serious pressure from more than one opposition player. ****ing leathering it anywhere is the coward's way out. Some might say sensible but that's not how we play. IT TAKES GUTS to do what he does. Anyway he loses possession after being shut down by two Swansea players and the commentators lay into him.

It was after that, and the error that quickly followed, that the Swansea fans ludicrously started cat-calling him and giving it the big 'un every time he got the ball. They soon gave that a rest as he barely gave the ball away once they started that bollocks. Cunts.

He had a good game again and once the game opened up in the 2nd half, and spaces and options became available to him, he found his man every time.

And not to mention his actual defending the whole time was nigh on immaculate, winning every header and tackle he seemed to go for. What a player he's on his way to becoming.

Immense, coming back from injury in such a tough game too.

Part of me is glad he is overlooked because I rate him so highly I'm glad he isn't getting all kinds of unwanted attention but the rest of me is almost livid because he deserves all the praise in the world.

Was solid again & great that he shut the Swansea fans right up... passing was fantastic. I know Can had a mare but that back 3 has been top notch for us this year...aswell as the keeper. If we can start firing up top... we will be a force.

Mamadou Sakho will never be known as a good passer, despite what your eyes tell you, just as Brendan Rodgers will never be considered a top manager, despite what the results tell you.

This is great because teams will target Sakho's 'weakness' and try to close him down expecting him to mis-pass. This will take players out of games. Same as teams scoffing at Rodgers' team selections and formations, before they get whooped and scratch their heads wondering what they did wrong as opposed to what Rodgers did right.

I don't think it's his passing that anyone has an issue with, it's his control of the ball and the odd occasion where he dwells on the ball under pressure. He is definitely more guilty of that than most, but with a clear line of sight to a red shirt, his passing is great.

And there's no point getting worked up at fans jeers, it's part and parcel, our fans do it.
