Thought he did quite well tonight considering he had no PL experience and was partnered with another CB who's barely played over the last 6 months. His strong points are obvious - excellent in the air, has self belief and is comfortable on the ball, although perhaps a little too comfortable as he got dispossessed several times IIRC, once he gets used to the PL's pace I hope he'll be a little more cautious in possession.

Shelvey makes the run past Gerrard, Skrtel is already moving to cover the space while sakho is trying to get back but neither are quick enough. If Lucas does his job sakho doesn't need to come out, when he doesn't, Sakho does, once that happens Gerrard should be tracking the run. If he's playing deep that's part of his job.

It was a poor goal but I wouldn't apportion any blame on Sakho. That's just me though.
I don't think Sakho needs to go that far with a player going away from goal when the midfielders are close by.

      But that is just me.

        .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Maybe he'd noticed they had started to do **** all by then and took matters into his own hands. The drop off from both Lucas and Gerrard during the second half in games so far is quite worrying. They aren't alone though.

It was a preventable goal, so it's always disappointing to lose it, since he's new I'll leave him out of the blame on this one

He did alright, all things considered. Not hugely impressive but his physical characteristics are obvious, and the part of his game that looked questionable - ballwinning - is exactly the area you'd probably expect him to be rusty in, given his lack of game time. He obviously likes to charge forward into the midfield to win the ball (same as Papadopoulos, so something we clearly were targeting) and between his lack of sharpness and playing in a new league, it's not surprising his timing was half a step off consistently. He grew into the game though, I thought, and will probably do better with Kolo next to him - nothing against Skrtel who played well again, but he's a better partner for Agger, whereas Kolo's positional sense and organizational ability would help cover for Sakho's occasional rampage.

He has physical predispositions to be dominating CB but his header technique is poor and his timing is completely off.

Also likes to take chances and intercept the ball which could be a very risky as he is not very fast and won't have an opportunity to correct the error if he doesn't get there first.

Will need time to adjust and adopt and he'll need to improve in more than few areas.

That said, given that he hasn't had the chance to practice with the first time and that he is not match sharp he did pretty decent job vs Swansea.

Not sure if it's me but the video you posted seems to contradict the opinions your posted here.

He won the majority of headers and a lot of them found a team mate. He kept possession, had quick feet and won most tackles.

Did you miss something from that video that gives a fuller picture?

Skrtel doesn't come across to cover the space Sakho has left.

Gerrard doesn't track the run of Shelvey.

Wisdom hasn't come across to cover Michu.

All at fault in different stages IMO.
                      Very much so.

If Sakho stays in position, there is no space for Shelvey to run in to; Sakho was over zealous (which is understandable on his debut) ... he just doesn't need to make that attempted challenge.

On a similar note, Sakho was at least three yards ahead of our defensive line for large spells of the game - a more vocal Toure will benefit Sakho in helping us retain our shape. This 'advanced' starting position is clouding his judgement as to whether he enters midfield or stays in defence. Unfortunately this was shown for Swansea's first goal when he came out, changed his mind and ended up doing nothing at all.

Yeah, his performance can be put down to a lack of match fitness and familiarity with his teammates. Probably the best person to partner him at the moment is Toure, who probably is the best organizer amongst the senior defenders and speaks the same language as well.

Though dropping Skrtel would seem hugely unfair right now.

Yep. It's Skrtel and one of Agger/Toure based on present form. Seems like the competition for places has lit a fire under his arse and we're getting back the imperious, throwing-body-on-the-line Skrtel.

I must be the only one who thought he did really well last night considering it was his first game for us. There were signs of his strength, composure, and yes, he was at fault for the goals, but he looked good in the tackle too.

                              I'd start him alongside Toure.

Always tough for a new player coming in, with what we`d correctly identified as our toughest game from six, never mind the defensive changes necessary beforehand, so any sweeping statements about the player are way off the mark.

But let's be honest, that was not a good debut. Headbanger performance.
