Adam Lallana will not play again for Liverpool to protect transfer, says Klopp

Midfielder most likely to rejoin Brendan Rodgers at Leicester
Klopp: ‘As long as we don’t need him, he will just train’

Jürgen Klopp has confirmed he will not select Adam Lallana again because he wants to protect the midfielder’s impending free transfer from Liverpool.

Lallana signed a short-term extension to stay until the end of the season but has not featured in a match-day squad since the restart. The 32-year-old, whom Klopp described as “a legend”, has several options when his deal expires and a reunion with Brendan Rodgers at Leicester appears most likely.

The former England midfielder has made 178 appearances for Liverpool since his £25m move from Southampton in 2014 but Klopp will not consider another outing in the final five matches because he wants to ensure the player remains fit for a transfer.

The Liverpool manager said: “It is clear Adam will leave the club in the summer, if the summer ever starts. I already miss everything about him. In this moment he is still here but we will miss him. He is one of the most influential players on the training quality I have ever had in my life. He is an incredible professional.

“But now we have a difficult situation and I will respect Adam a lot. Everything with Adam is sorted, let me say it like this. He is so fit, he is training, everything is fine, but the future is his future. And if we need his help on the pitch we can get it. He trains 100% but as long as we don’t need him, he will just train.”

Klopp added: “There were a lot of discussions about players without contracts. With him there was not even a discussion. It was clear Adam would extend his contract and he wanted to do that as well, but he will not put any risk on his future or whatever. That is absolutely clear. He is one of the most important players of the time since I am here so I wish him only the best for the future. From my point of view he is already a legend here, so he can become a legend somewhere else from next season.”

Liverpool visit Brighton on Wednesday and Klopp insists he will not rest any other players to prepare for next season. He said, however, that the champions may be in better condition for 2020-21 than many of the teams still involved in European competition.

“We will have a short break, we will have hopefully a short pre-season depending on when we start, and that is pretty much the same for all the teams apart from those who are still in Europe. I don’t know how they will sort that,” he said. “If [Manchester] City goes through to the Champions League final at the end of August that is really, really tough. Or United, Chelsea and Wolves; they are all still in Europe and it would be really tough for them. For us it is already tough but I think we can deal with it.”

So what was behind the idea of giving him an extension for rest of the season then?
Nope, don't need anger management, you just need to stop pissing me off!

Let him finish the title winning season with us?

I would think so yeah, a bit of goodwill, and also cover in the event of injuries.

Klopp's getting some heat for his 'legend' comment but you can understand why he loves him and why he'd be so glowing about him. His attitude has always been spot on, he's always worked his bollocks off, and when Klopp first came it's easy to imagine Lallana was the first one to get the whole counter-pressing stuff. If I remember rightly Lallana was fabulous at Spurs in Klopp's first game.

He set the wheels in motion for what Klopp wanted from us. He's been decent when called upon last two seasons and stopped us losing to United.

His one really good season under Klopp seems to have been forgotten. He doesn't get the credit but definitely not a full blown legend.

He was one of the key players in setting up the pressing system when Klopp first came, and played a key role that season, obviously he has been affected by injuries and hasn't been the same player since. I could be wrong but I get the impression that he is one of the players who contributes alot in training and behind the scenes so his 'legendary' status is probably more to do with that than in the last few years than what he has done on the pitch.

Basically the situation is as we thought and works well for everyone, we keep the squad unity, he gets to celebrate and be involved, doesn't risk injury, allows players who will be here next season (such as Jones) to get some game time and he is there to call upon if we need him, it works for everyone.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Yeah, he was playing really well for us and for England. Shame about his injuries, as he really was a Klopp player. Think its a nice gesture.
In the beginning, Fowler created the Heaven and the Earth.

Klopp values a player's all round contribution and so Lallana can be largely credited for being the spearhead of gegenpressing in it's earliest implementation at Liverpool.

He's tactically astute, a former club captain and works extremely hard on and off the field.

I think we have moved on from Lallana and him getting a move elsewhere whilst still being able to be a part of the celebrations is a nice outcome for everyone.

I did see an interesting observation on Twitter - he had his contract extended until the end of the season (6 extra weeks), he was on over £100k p/w.....so that is circa £650k if he kept the same terms. People were moaning over the fact the club furloughed staff immediately after the Covid situation yet kept him on earning a significant amount of money knowing he wouldn’t play.....

I like they are doing right by him but I hope a reasonable wage was agreed for this gardening period

It's better for the blood pressure if you don't think about the countless millions spent on salaries over the last 3 months or so...including on those who hardly ever play. Fans often want international-level bench warmers who come on and and do not result in a drop off in quality...that means paying gazillions for them to warm the bench. 'too football.

I remember reading that when Klopp asked him to extend, he offered to take a big pay cut but Klopp said no.

Thanks for clarifying, as I said above it was something I noticed on Twitter. I’m not sure how I feel about it personally but Klopp is all about fairness IMO
