    Probably this, sadly.

Two weeks ago I wanted us to give him an extension but it would be reckless now. This sort of injury coupled with his age and previous… we can’t. Plus we have the non-HG player issue which we need to consider.

Gutted for him. What a player he was - one of the most underrated players to have played in the PL. Great signing and a fabulous meme generator.

    Gutted for the lad.

Hopefully he’ll get his coaching badges & stick around
        Hello mert.

He can have a contract, just not to play football.

Sounds like the club are going to cover his road ro recovery at least with a new contract.

Will likely be a reduced deal and we don't have to register him. But at least he'll be supported during his rehabilitation.

He was injured whole with us, so we should cover his rehab, but not sure about the new contract though.

On the other hand, its nice that we care about our players... but I reckon unless he has a hidden coke habit that he will be ok.

The new contract is how we cover him and keep him secure during his rehab though.
So he doesn't fall out if contract half way through, as no-one else is going to offer him a deal at that stage.

The terms offered to him will reflect the circumstances no doubt.

I love Matip, one of my favourite players over the years but if a new contract means no replacement then that’s just negligence. Very kind, but negligent.

It's a difficult one this, because he is a very good player and he's probably first choice when he is fit, so had he not got injured giving him another year wouldn't have been a bad decision in terms of next season and short term, but I do feel that we need a long term solution and at the moment I am still not convinced than Konate or Gomez are more than squad players. Konate's injury record isn't great he seems to constantly pick up small injuries that see him miss a handful of games. Gomez is decent enough but after getting his injury in the 2020-21 season I don't feel that he got back to the level he was at the couple of seasons before that which is really what we need. It feels like we have been needing to bring in a new first choice CB for a little while now and the Matip injury has made that somewhat more urgent. The injury he has got often takes a long time to come back from and given his age etc even if he made a good recovery got a 1 year extension I'm not sure we would see him back at his current level in that time frame.

I know people will mention Quansah and he has looked very impressive but IMO it is too soon to have expectations of him in that regard. He hasn't been playing regularly enough for opposition teams to get a good enough look at him and target his weaknesses, I think how a young CB responds to that is what determines how good they will be,
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I don’t think the contract extension is so much to do with what Matip can offer us in the future, as just to do right by him and not leave him to do the majority of his rehabilitation as an out of contract player.

I’m sure we do have plans to reinforce our defensive options, but as we’ve seen in the past, we won’t necessarily bring forward or change these plans as a reaction to an injury.

Would the club have insurance to cover his rehab? That’s probably only valid as long as he is under contract. The contract extension itself may only be a nominal wage (for a Prem player) and shouldn’t impact our ability to bring in a replacement too much.

                          A contract extension at say a 100k a week?

Why does an injured footballer need that?

Just pay rehab costs. The wage saving will be millions

£100k isn’t nominal. We are just speculating as to the level at the moment.

Confirmed by the club now that he’s off in the summer.

We all know about the injuries but what a class player he was when fit and what a signing.

Good luck to Joel in the future and thanks for the amazing memories.
