Nah it’s a myth. You’re not supposed to use a phone on the forecourt in case of distraction when dispensing fuel, or walking out in front of a car, etc. Not because your Samsung Galaxy can ignite fuel!

You’re totally permitted to use you phone from within your car.

There was a myth about electromagnetic currents (and fuel vapour) subsequently de-bunked, but I'm sure I once read that an explosion is theoretically possible if using a phone with a defective battery.

Either way it never seems to happen.
