I never said he couldn't play left wing. I said he was struggling to adapt, which he was at the time and myself and Jaco agreed it wasn't that he couldn't play there as he did previously... it was that he was simply in a slump so not OTT or knee jerk, was a the truth at that time.Originally posted by RedReet View PostI totally disagree.
Was Mane not getting plenty of praise last year for his selflessness? Was he more intelligent then?
If he goes on a run of form like Salah did, converting most of his chances, does that make him smarter?
To declare him 'not the smartest' because he's been a bit greedy recently is a bit OTT and knee-jerk. It remind me of last year when it was argued (by Dan too IIRC) that Mane can't play LW because he went through a bit of a bad patch and it coincided that he was playing LW at that particular time.
Some interesting responses, I'm not saying Mane is an idiot ffs, merely saying thst imo he not the smartest of player around. Had this conversation with a Madrid fan a few months ago about Gareth Bale and we agreed that physically he's brilliant (when fit) pace, power, athleticism but he isn't the smartest player, some of the runs, passes and final ball etc.
Of course it's simplistic to suggest get a load of fit lads and they can all play in Klopps system but the fact is if you do not have an engine and legs.. you cannot and will not exist in klopps system. We have targeted and identified specific characteristics in players to suit what Klopp wants in a player.
I see Mane as a pure athlete, dogged and relentless in work rate and effort. He creates so many chances with his raw pace but sometimes his end product, final ball and decision making let's his approach play down.
He is a brilliant player that imo can still improve and I feel he will be one of our most important players this season.

Nobody is disputing that athleticism and stamina aren’t key in such a physically demanding style of play, of course they are. But you did say that intelligence isn’t a requirement for Klopp’s system. It absolutely is, and is very much one of those characteristics that we look for in players.Originally posted by danperkins View PostI never said he couldn't play left wing. Bobby, Gini, Virgil, Salah, Fabinho, Keita, etc are all not just talented footballers and athletes, they’re also extremely smart players (Trent appears to be well ahead of his years too).
There’s umpteen players in the Premier League that can match for these guys running, work rate, physicality, etc. It’s their game intelligence that sets them apart from many of them though..

The players you mentioned are intelligent footballers.. I just don't see Sadio as one of them. Brilliant player but more of an all action, helter skelter type. Brains and physicality are needed in every team.Originally posted by Pepe79 View PostNobody is disputing that athleticism and stamina aren’t key in such a physically demanding style of play, of course they are. Disagree with you Dan, Mane has that streak, whereby he may do things that he backs himself, regardless or not if it is the 'smartest' in your eyes, but we do need those type of confident players that can back themselves even if it doesn't go off, he has the intelligence and confidence especially improved with his defensive contribution since his earlier days (movement and positioning), if that is not a sign of intelligence, then what is? I think you are being too harsh on him in regard to his footballing brain on both sides of the field,

That's fair enough mate, nothing wrong with confidence & all the top forwards are selfish. I think Mane will tear it up this season, said this at the start of the season, cracking player that if decision making & final ball were better... he would be world class.Originally posted by Myo View PostDisagree with you Dan, Mane has that streak, whereby he may do things that he backs himself, regardless or not if it is the 'smartest' in your eyes, but we do need those type of confident players that can back themselves even if it doesn't go off, he has the intelligence and confidence especially improved with his defensive contribution since his earlier days (movement and positioning), if that is not a sign of intelligence, then what is? As i said, i'm not suggesting the fella was in dunce class or anything just that I see him as more of an athlete.

Ok, I think you're being harsh on Mane. But I was talking about your take on what's needed to play in Klopp's system, rather than your opinion on a particular player.Originally posted by danperkins View PostThe players you mentioned are intelligent footballers.. I still Mane is one of our best, love watching him play.Originally posted by Pepe79 View PostOk, I think you're being harsh on Mane. But I was talking about your take on what's needed to play in Klopp's system, rather than your opinion on a particular player.
Obviously it's simplistic to suggest that if you are able to run around alot, you can do great in a Klopp system, clearly most managers have strategies/systems etc that have to be learned & then implemented. I just think the real brains of our system is the midfield lads & Virgil who commands the backline. That's not to say the 3 lads up top are morons, just that I think Mane's game in particular exists more on being a top athlete, in peak condition rather relying on his footballing smarts. A huge part of Klopp's system is endless energy, pace & relentless pressing, all of which Mane has in spades.. as does most of the other lads. it is something that Klopp clearly identifies in players or potential targets.
The original argument was about Mane, the system came after that but just to clarify again... i am not saying that guy is an idiot, or that he is ****, or that i hate him... just to clarify. Anyways i'm done talking about it, Mane is awesome & I love Klopp and the system he plays.. the end
