Georginio Wijnaldum has chosen to leave Liverpool at the end of the season to join Barcelona. The Sunday Times understands that the Holland international has agreed a pre-contract deal to become the first signing of Joan Laporta’s second spell as president of the Catalan club.

Wijnaldum is out of contract in the summer so he will join without Barcelona having to pay a transfer fee. The midfielder has been a priority target of his compatriot Ronald Koeman since his appointment as Barcelona head coach last August, but the club’s financial crisis prevented a move last summer. The 30-year-old’s signing is a vote of confidence in Koeman.

Wijnaldum joined Liverpool from Newcastle in 2016 for £25 million and became a pivotal part of a team that brought a Premier League title to Anfield for the first time last season and won the Champions League in 2019, making 225 appearances.

Wijnaldum’s possible departure has been an issue all season and the manager Jürgen Klopp made it clear he wanted the player to be around next season.

“I would be happy if he would stay here,” Klopp said earlier this season. “I am pretty happy with Gini. You can see that when you see most of the line-ups. He always played good, that’s why he played so many games. And he has played plenty of positions; different positions.”

Wijnaldum spoke recently of his love of playing for Liverpool, which suggests his move away from Anfield was essentially financial. Asked if it would be difficult to leave the midfielder said: “Really difficult. If that happens, you would be leaving a team that you really love. A team that you shared a lot of years together, a team where you feel really comfortable. That would be difficult but, on the other side, you would know the situation why you have to leave.

“It always depends on the situation but I would be devastated [if] I didn’t play with this team any more, that’s for sure,” he said.

I think we knew this is where he’d end up - even in the current **** state they are a huge draw. The questions I’d be asking if him is will Koeman still be there and what position do they see him fulfilling - if they continue with the 4-3-3 then it will be similar to what he does today. He also has Frenkie there and rumours of Depay also

He has been a great servant but I wonder how many miles he has left in him - we gave flogged him to death and there is a reason we aren’t offering him a long contract. The slower Spanish league will suit him
