I agree with the Melissa Reddy article. Humour and irony do not work very well on the internet so the second comment quoted here appears, at first glance, to show the first is untrue. (I am sure it wasn't intended to be a serios comment, so apologies for using it as an example here.) I know we mean most of the outrageous comments we make to be humourous but in this day and age we need to be careful. And I know football is an emotional game but excusing genuinely OTT comments on those grounds is just not right; no one would accept that excuse from me if, during an emotional moment in a game, I did violence to a relative of yours so we all know there are limits...the debate is over where those limits should be.

I do find it baffling though. He's always come across as honest, humble, always smiling, genuine good person. He shares some of his feelings on a subject none of us know any of the details, yet so many are quick to condemn him and call him a liar.

If her point is simply that social media abuse is bad, then yeah, accepted, but like it or not, that is the real world now, and not just for celebrities. But criticism of a player for leaving for more money or ‘love’ is as old as the professional game, and avoidable abuse online doesn’t seem as bad as booing when returning to an old club, the more traditional method, but that’s individual I guess.

So let’s go with her conclusion, he left because of money and a fragile ego.

Not at all. No doubt he left for more money, and he was completely entitled to, for reasons explained in the article. The defence has been against the sheer nonsense that he’s supposed to have claimed the he left because of the online abuse or criticism. Again, this is spelt out in the article.

And that’s simply not her conclusion at all. Her conclusion is that he left to earn the wages he deserved and because he knows he own value. So let’s go with that.

          Yay.

No crowds has also meant he hasn't received that instant gratification in stadiums for the past 18 months.

I'm amazed that footballers read the comments on Social Media tbh, totally reductive. I guess that is part of the problem, it is pandoras box with unverified and anonymous posts free to sat pretty much everything. It does seem as though he really wanted to stay.

Gini should have logged in here over the last few years almost universal praise, and from the absolute beginning from the likes of myself

If you are logged on to Est Gini - thanks for the memories!!!

It's disappointing that Gini felt undervalued at Liverpool. Of all our midfielders, Gini and Fabinho received the least amount of criticism.

Great memories during a very successful period at Liverpool. I wish him nothing but the best at PSG.
              Another MASSIVE game

                I'm absolutely serious..

When I say he was a terrific player and gave 100% to the shirt.

He's a legend in my eyes and I hope he does well at PSG, bar winning big ears at our expense

Class player & a great attitude imo, so under rated. Had a poor season for sure but he was not alone in that. He's tough to replace.

This thread getting moved or will that hurt Gini's feelings ?

**** him. Old news. Immense player in the big games and often a passenger in games he needed to impose himself more on to get us a result. Largely below par last season.

Thanks mate, good luck in the new venture.

I'm in the "wat" camp too. He kept fit and at times held us together when all about it was falling apart. On average he had to be more defensive - both in terms of positioning and in terms of playing the safe ball - than previously (because of the injuries and repositioning and form of other players), and sometimes that meant he was not as progressive as we - sat up on high and able to see the whole thing - thought he could've been, but that sort of comment, which has been repeated by many, is part of what he was talking about last weekend.

To be fair he didn't hit the heights of previous seasons, but few people in the league did because of the condensed season, and very few in our side did due to the constant chopping and changing of players due to injury, and the resulting changes of tactics that occurred as a result.

I think that any drop in performance can be mitigated by the situation around him and while you might be able to find the odd performance where he had a poor game I think over the season he did as well as you could expect. He was certainly one of our better performers and was always in the side, I don't think we can have any complaints.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
