He''s not garbage but he also wasn't good enough for us and certainly didn't give us anywhere near the return we thought we'd get for the outlay. On top of that he's spent absolutely ages in the treatment room. I'm still mystified why everyone expected a worldie from this guy. He never looked like it in Germany and the premiership is another league above. The only reason he's getting an innings now is because our midfield is looking dire and Klopp has to throw a lot of dice.

He wants a pay bump and a long contract and we'd be mad to give him one. Let him go. If he's the answer to our problems we're asking the wrong questions.

As to bad management, you'll always sign duffers, you just need to have a good proportion of good signings as well, and we've had plenty. Just go back to the Karius thread to see how long everyone hung on to the idea of him coming good after it was abundantly clear he was a dud.

Again if he was like Gini and we literally flogged him for the 5 years, then you could justify it. But i think if he plays every game for the rest of the season (which he won't) then he will have made about 100 appearances for Liverpool.

So 53m transfer fee, 120k per week for 5 years amounts to an 84, 200,000 investment on lfcs part. £842,000 for every one of those 100 games that he played. This would have made Mbappe on a free transfer but a million quid a week wage look like a cheao deal all round.

Having said all of that, it would probably still be a bad idea to extend his deal and throw good money after baf. I think.

You just know that he will end up ripping it up at his next gig though ffs

And if he had worked out it would have been a bargain. Like any transfer it was a gamble. Some work, some don't.

He goes in the summer, then we have what we were paying him to offer to a new player.

This is it exactly- he’s always going to have been a bad signing, but as you say, no point in throwing good money after bad. We are where we are, best foot forward is to get rid of him. If some club was stupid enough to bid on him, it would have been great, but as they didn’t, we just need to cut our losses and wish the useless cunt all the best in his future endeavors

it didn’t work out, but tbf he looked like he was ticking all the boxes, when he was at Leipzig- just goes to show that sometimes ya just get unlucky and it doesn’t work out

            Naby Keita 16/17 Bundesliga stats:

AOC will have a hell of a time finding a club unless he drops his wage demands. any of our players who will be out of contract could be signing contracts abroad by now i think, and even on a free nobody has signed any of them yet.

maybe they're trying, who knows, but for the most part i think our midfield players just aren't worth what they'd sell for, and in some cases what their wages would be. you do get paid for seniority and time spent places, it's the same at my job, so i don't really blame the club for giving some of the contracts that they have over time, but it does mean that by the ends of those contracts, it may be that those players are just not worth that money anymore for anyone just starting a relationship with those players.

              or even here.

as I've said numerous times, one of the worst value for money signings in the clubs history. Absolute disaster.

I think it's all part of the game, some you win some you lose. Personally I would have liked us to have moved him on for a fee a couple of years ago when it was clear that it wasn't working out as planned, but as people say you can't force someone to bid. He wasn't the player we expected him to be but he has been ok as a squad player in that context his signing hasn't been a complete disaster, he has still been able to offer something and that's perhaps why we haven't bombed him out. Obviously as it turned out he wasn't worth the fee we paid but once he's in the squad he's not horribly out of his depth.

To be honest I find Ox the more frustrating signing of the two, I think we over paid for him given his contract situation and I was concerned from signing him about his injury record. He had that good run before his first injury were I thought I may have judged him prematurely. With Keita I can see why we spent the money we were hoping to get the player we saw in Germany, with Ox I never really though his potential was that much higher than when we got him, Keita looked a potential superstar, it just didn't happen for him.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

We all knew Ox was a permacroc at arsenal so unless he was having daily showers with river ganges holy water things were never going to change.
A few good games for ingurlund in meaningless friendlies made him look a world in at times, but he was never a sensible option. As bad a choice as Joe Cole or balotelli ffs!

Am more or less the same. Keita you could see why we bid so much for him. He was tearing up the Bundesliga and looked amazing, then we got him and broke him over and over.

Chamberlain was an odd one and I think a lot of us tried to convince ourselves there was a lot more there waiting to be unearthed by Klopp than there actually was.

However once bought you cannot simply get rid if a player does not want to go and more importantly if other clubs do not offer wat we want for them.

Neither are close to being the worst transfers we ever made in my eyes though be it from a value for money pov or a being a disgrace to the shirt pov.

Guys like Diouf are miles ahead on that score.

We do have control over what we want for them though. Maybe an undue reluctance to take a short term hit for long term gain plays a part.

...wonder what his wages per game equates to?

Can't be far short of Winston Bogarde's record of 9 games in four years on £40k/week for the Chavs.

you can see why AOC was brought in, english player with experience in a top side in a contract situation at another club, it may be worth taking a punt on a number for the squad in an inflated homegrown market when something like that comes along. maybe not everyone's idea of a great signing but not devoid of logic.
